Chapter 40: The Alpha’s Indifference
(Elena’s POV)
When Catherine Hayes rushed to the healing institute, she was startled by my red and swollen eyes.
“Luna, what happened to you?” Her voice trembled with shock.
I explained that someone had splashed pepper spray on me. “I’ll be fine after a period of rest.” Catherine’s face filled with concern. “Should I inform Alpha Marcus immediately?”
I stopped her quickly. “No, don’t bother him with his busy pack duties. I only trust you, Catherine.”
Her eyes softened with emotion at my words. “I understand, Luna. I’ll keep this between us.”
For the next two days, I remained in the healing institute. My eyes gradually opened, though slight swelling still surrounded them.
Catherine diligently brought meals and provided care. Just after she left one afternoon, Sophia Rivers appeared at my door.
“I came to visit you,” Sophia said, though her tone lacked genuine concern.
I looked at her coldly. “Are you here to see me or mock me?”
Sophia sat down, placing a newly released designer handbag in front of her. The expensive leather gleamed under the fluorescent lights.
“Has Marcus visited you?” she asked casually.
I remained silent, unwilling to give her the satisfaction of an answer.
She smiled knowingly. “Marcus accompanied me shopping yesterday. He bought me this handbag worth thousands without hesitation.”
Her words cut deeper than intended. “He’s never taken you shopping, has he?”
I suppressed my emotions, but her deliberate flaunting still affected me. Despite trying to ignore it, I couldn’t deceive myself about the pain.
For the first time, I spoke earnestly to Sophia. “You’ve already won because Marcus loves you. Why do you still target me?”
Sophia felt mocked by my calm words. She had been misled into thinking Marcus disliked me, but he lived with me.
The revelation made her feel betrayed and confused about his true feelings.
“If you had left the healing institute and disappeared from Marcus’s sight earlier, things would have been better,” she stated coldly.
I realized what she truly wanted. “Don’t worry, in another month, I will leave. There will be no one to hinder
you.”
Sophia doubted my sincerity, but I didn’t bother to explain further.

She left, pondering my words about my planned departure.
(David’s POV)
I quietly watched from outside the door, wearing a cap pulled low over my eyes. Elena sat by the window, watching the swaying curtains.
Her hands were clenched tightly in her lap. The pain and grievances she endured alone broke my heart.
I had been secretly following Sophia and discovered she had ordered the attack on my sister. Elena was suffering so much, and she faced it all alone.
I lowered my cap further, my eyes reddening with anger and determination. This time, I would protect my
sister.

The next day, Catherine brought breakfast to Elena as usual. She noticed the familiar luxury sedan parked in front of the building.
The driver opened the rear door for Marcus Blackwood, who stepped out with his commanding presence.
Catherine respectfully greeted him. Marcus noticed the thermal container she carried.
“Who is that for?” he asked, his golden eyes studying her carefully.
Catherine replied awkwardly, “It’s for Elena.”
Marcus frowned deeply. “What happened to her?”
Catherine felt sorry for Elena. “Your mate is hospitalized, and you didn’t know.”
She explained quickly, “Elena didn’t want you to worry. That’s why she didn’t tell you.”
Marcus smiled coldly at her words. “Is that what she said?”
Catherine nodded earnestly. “Yes, Alpha.”
“I see. Go ahead,” Marcus said dismissively.
(Elena’s POV)
Officer Reynolds was taking my statement regarding the pepper spray incident.
“The suspect has a history of mental illness and has injured people before,” he informed me.
I was puzzled. “How could he accurately find me at the institute?”
Officer Reynolds admitted it was strange. “We can’t press charges due to his mental condition. The case will be settled through compensation.”
He continued, “The suspect’s family has agreed to compensate. Do you agree with this process?”
I sighed deeply. “I agree to proceed accordingly.”
After Officer Reynolds left, Catherine arrived with breakfast. She placed it on the table and hesitated to speak.
I noticed her reluctance. “Catherine, speak freely.”
She confessed nervously, “I encountered Marcus on my way here. I told him about your hospital.
n.”
I acknowledged calmly, “I don’t blame you.”
(God’s POV)
At the Territorial Enforcement Station, after signing the compensation agreement, the Pepper Spray Attacker’s family waited outside.
Mrs. Harrison and Mr. Harrison were used to their son’s violent episodes. They preferred resolving issues with
money.
Amber Stone arrived with a team of lawyers. After spending over ten minutes inside, Officer Reynolds emerged.
“You can’t take the suspect home today,” he informed the waiting family.
Mrs. Harrison’s expression changed drastically. “We agreed to compensation! The victim isn’t pressing
charges!”
Her husband protested loudly, “We demand to speak to the station chief!”
Officer Reynolds was speechless. He thought they should have kept their mentally ill son at home.
“This time, it’s not that I’m not giving you consideration,” he said grimly. “It’s that your son attacked the wrong
person!”
