Chapter 50: Shadows of Corruption
(Marcus’s POV)
My car stopped under the ancient sycamore trees near the Territorial Enforcement Station. I lowered the back window, the harsh sunlight engulfing the car and me, my face obscured in shadows.
Chief Morrison hurried over from across the street. “Alpha Blackwood.” I motioned for Chief Morrison to get in the car. The ancient sycamore trees cast long shadows across the pavement, creating a natural canopy of
secrecy.
Chief Morrison walked around to the passenger side, opened the door, and sat down heavily. His face was
pale with anxiety.
“The officer on duty that day was a relative of Director Harold Thornfield’s family,” he began, his voice trembling slightly. “No matter how I questioned him, he claimed he was asleep that day and no one reported
the incident to him.”
I remained silent, letting him continue. The air conditioning hummed quietly in the background.
Chief Morrison shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “The indoor surveillance also had a maintenance record that day, and the people in the monitoring room assumed it was under maintenance.”
He wiped sweat from his forehead. “They also thought that since the prisoners were locked up together, nothing major would happen.”
Chief Morrison felt increasingly embarrassed as he spoke. He knew that such negligence could cost him his position as chief if the Northern Territory Council found out..
His career hung by a thread, and we both knew it.
I loosened my tie and turned to face him directly, “Asleep on duty, surveillance maintenance? Even if the surveillance in the detention cell is broken, shouldn’t someone be monitoring them 24 hours a day?”
My voice remained calm, but the Alpha pressure was unmistakable. “Can’t you see the reason behind these
simple oversights?”
Cold sweat trickled down Chief Morrison’s forehead. The weight of my authority pressed down on him like a
physical force.
“Harold Thornfield,” I muttered, processing the information. “Which Harold Thornfield are we talk bout?”
Chief Morrison’s voice cracked slightly. “The one from the Revenue Authority.”
I looked out the window calmly, watching the shadows dance beneath the sycamore trees. “Investigate
Harold Thornfield’s people.”
Chief Morrison’s shirt was soaked with sweat. He shivered as the air conditioning enveloped him.
He hesitated, clearly uncomfortable with what he was about to say. “Harold Thornfield has connections with
Elder Harrison.”
I dismissed this concern with a wave of my hand. “The Harrison family couldn’t suppress me.”

Chief Morrison understood immediately. The hierarchy was clear, and I outranked them all.
(Elena’s POV)
The next day, I returned to the Northern Territory Central Healing Institute. I had planned to care for David
while working, but fate had other plans.
A suspension notice waited on my desk. The official reason cited my “scandals” as bringing negative impact
to the institute.
I had planned to work for one more month, but someone was clearly thwarting my plans. The timing was too
convenient to be coincidental.
I packed my belongings methodically, emptying my healing chamber of personal items. Each item I placed in the box felt like another piece of my life being stripped away.
Several pack nurses gathered near the corridor, their voices carrying clearly.
“Did Elena resign or get suspended because of her scandals?” one whispered.
“I heard it was the scandals,” another replied. “All that drama with her brother and the Alpha.”
Sophia emerged from her office just as I was walking toward the exit with my boxes. A hint of surprise
flashed in her eyes, quickly replaced by satisfaction.
Sophia approached me with false sympathy painted across her face. “It’s such a pity that the neurosurgery
department is losing such a capable person.”
I smiled coldly at her transparent act. “It’s good to be away from hypocritical people.”
Sophia’s smile faltered instantly. Her mask slipped for just a moment, revealing the malice beneath.
I walked past her without another word, leaving her speechless in the corridor.
The other nurses fell silent as I passed, their gossip dying on their lips.
I walked out of the institute building, my boxes heavy in my arms. A Rolls–Royce was parked conspicuously
near the entrance.
Amber Stone stood beside the vehicle, greeting me with professional courtesy. Marcus’s face was visible
through the lowered back window.
I couldn’t understand his timing. Why was he here now?
Seeing the boxes in my arms, Marcus reacted with surprising calmness. “Since you’re being transferred anyway, you should rest at home.”
His voice was matter–of–fact. “I’ve arranged a better private medical center for your brother with an expenses
covered.”
I was taken aback by his unexpected offer. “What are your intentions?”
Marcus replied simply, “I’ll take care of everything.”
I wondered what Marcus was really up to. Was he trying to control David to threaten me later?
In my daze, Marcus commented on my ordinary attire. “We should go shopping for new clothes.”
Before I could respond, Amber Stone opened the car door and took the boxes from my arms.

I remained still, my suspicion growing. “You should speak directly instead of beating around the bush.”
Marcus stopped playing with his watch and looked at me directly. “My father has returned. We’re going to the
Blackwood Ancestral Manor for dinner tonight.”
I understood immediately. This was the real reason for his sudden attention.
I didn’t say anything and got into the car. The leather seats felt cold against my skin.
Marcus took me to Silverbrook International, the largest shopping center under the Blackwood Consortium’s
name. I had been to this mall with Marcus before, but as his “assistant.”
Two shop assistants greeted us respectfully, their eyes bright with recognition.
Marcus instructed them with Alpha authority. “Help her pick out some clothes.”
A saleswoman enthusiastically led me inside the boutique. The luxury overwhelmed my senses.
Soon, the saleswomen presented me with over thirty new fashion outfits. Each piece cost tens of thousands,
more than most pack members earned in months.
I didn’t have the patience to look through them all. I picked out a simple backless dress and headed to the
dressing room.
(Marcus’s POV)
Outside the dressing room, I sat with my legs crossed, waiting. The boutique buzzed with quiet activity
around us.
Amber Stone noticed my restlessness. “Should I check on Elena?”
Before I could answer, voices drifted from nearby customers.
“Look at that beautiful woman,” someone whispered. “Is she Marcus’s mate?”
“She seems like a fragile doll with no light in her eyes,” another voice added.
I looked up and saw Elena emerging from the dressing room.
She was indescribably beautiful. Her thick black hair cascaded down her back like silk.
The vintage red backless gown accentuated her snow–white skin perfectly. Light poured down on her, creating a unique and captivating aura.
I stared at her, momentarily speechless. She had always been beautiful, but tonight she looked ethereal.
Elena felt self–conscious under my prolonged silence. “I’ve made my choice.”
I responded indifferently, though my wolf Logan stirred with appreciation. My gaze swept over ner fair neck.
“Something’s missing,” I said simply,
I waved my hand, and a saleswoman brought a set of pearl jewelry to me. The pearls gleamed under the
boutique lights.
I stood up and approached Elena slowly. She instinctively wanted to retreat, but I closed the distance
between us.
My arms loosely encircled her as I reached for the necklace clasp. She felt the coolness of the pearls against
ber neck.
