Chapter 117: The Truth Behind the Bond
(Marcus Blackwood’s POV)
“You ask me why I accepted our mating?” Elena sneered. “I told you back then it wasn’t for the status of Luna, but did you believe me? What’s the point of you asking me why now?”
“It’s meaningful,” I moved half an inch closer to her. “At least, I want to hear the answer.”
With a face as still as an ancient well, Elena replied, “You want an answer, don’t you? Fine. I accepted our mating for money.”
Hearing the sting in her tone, I lowered my voice. “That’s not what you truly think.”
She retorted, “Or did you really think I accepted our bond because I liked you?”
I fell silent. After a moment, I asked, “Wasn’t it?”
She was stunned for a second, then looked away, refusing to meet my gaze again. “I made a deal with your
grandmother back then, precisely to climb the social ladder. My foster father wanted to restore the
Blackthorne family’s fortunes. As a daughter of the Blackthorne family, is there anything wrong with me
finding a powerful and wealthy Alpha to help my family achieve that?”
I watched her calmly, as if trying to see through the truth of her words.
But Elena didn’t soften.
“You’ve heard the answer you wanted, Marcus. Don’t come looking for me again.”
As she tried to leave, I grabbed her arm. Exhaustion washed over her.
“Marcus, I don’t want anything anymore. I’m just begging you to let me go, okay?”
My eyes flashed red, my Alpha control stretched to its limit. “Let you go? What if I don’t?”
I cupped the back of her head, pulling her into my embrace. “I’ve said it before, unless you kill me, or you will
never sever our mate bond.”
Her face changed. “Are you crazy?!”
“Yes, I’m crazy,” I laughed, my warm, dry hand caressing her face, a touch so light it sent a chill through her. “The thought of you with another male will only make me crazier. Elena, I’ll give you whatever you want.”
She struggled against me. “I don’t care for it!”
Just then, the healing chamber door was pushed open. Hugo stood there, witnessing the scene.
“Am I interrupting?” he remarked.
Elena pushed herself out of my arms, her face a mixture of anger and deep embarrassment at being seen in such a compromising situation with her mate at work.
My gaze turned cold as I met the other man’s eyes. “So you’re the male living with my Luna?”
I now understood why Amber Stone couldn’t find any background on this man named Hugo Ashworth; the surname ‘Ashworth‘ was a significant one among the four great families.

Elena tried to de–escalate. “Hugo, please leave first. I can handle this myself.”
But Hugo interjected, “What? You’re living in my apartment, and you don’t need my help?”
He then brazenly provoked me. I asked coolly, “Didn’t Mr. Ashworth know she’s mated?”
Hugo simply shrugged. “What’s wrong with being the other male for love?”
My eyes flickered to Elena. “Love? Stealing another Alpha’s Luna. Is the Ashworth family’s lifelong reputation going to be ruined by you?”
When Hugo replied, “I don’t care,” I delivered a precise blow. “But would she let her friend bear such a bad
name?”
Elena’s lips tightened. I had unerringly pinpointed her greatest fear, reminding her that relying on others was a futile strategy she had to abandon.
Seeing her resolve, Elena assured Hugo she could handle it, and he left. I smirked, taking her hand.
“How do you plan to resolve things with me?”
She pulled her hand free. “You guess?” she said, before turning the tables on me. “Marcus, can I interpret your behavior today as you having fallen in love with me? You don’t want to sever our mate bond because you’ve developed feelings?”
I was visibly taken aback. She pressed her advantage, poking my chest.
“Is the great Alpha Marcus afraid to express his feelings?”
My back stiffened.
“Unfortunately, it’s too late,” she said, her smile vanishing. “If I had known before all this t could fall for a she–wolf like me, I would have been so proud. If you had only favored me have been saved long ago, and what would Sophia have to do with anything?”
Pained, I pleaded, “Elena. Don’t say these things in that tone.”
I cornered her against a desk, but she remained indifferent.
Alpha Marcus amily would
Accepting her coldness, I made my offer, a clear threat veiled as a kindness. “Move out of his place,” I said, touching her hair. “You must want to take care of David yourself, right? The suite at Moonhaven Estate is very
large.”
Elena’s response was a sharp taunt. “Is Alpha Marcus perhaps thinking of claiming me again?”
I flinched but promised, “If you’re not willing, I won’t touch you.”
With a scoff, she agreed. “I hope Alpha Marcus keeps his word.”
Just as I processed her agreement, she delivered a final cut. “Since you refuse to sever our bond, it’s indeed inappropriate for me to live with another male. After all, I have to protect his reputation. I can be scolded, but he cannot.”
She left me standing there, utterly stunned.
(Elena Blackwood’s POV)
The next day, as Amber Stone arrived to pick me up, I ran into Hugo with my single suitcase. He leaned against the doorframe.

“Planning to get back together with your mate?”
I laughed. “Get back together? Impossible.”
“Then what kind of solution is this?” he asked, glancing at my suitcase. “I heard Alpha Marcus has an unforgettable she–wolf he was entangled with during your mating. He disregarded all pack honor and righteousness, so why are you suddenly so considerate?”
His words pierced my heart, a painful reminder of how ridiculous my mating looked to outsiders. I maintained my front.
“How I solve it is my own business.”
Hugo stepped closer, his voice filled with genuine concern. “If it weren’t for you being Professor Theodore’s student, I wouldn’t meddle. Elena, you can’t be so naive as to think that by going along with him, he’ll agree to sever the mate bond, can you? Just because your foster brother is in his hands, you’re going to disregard yourself like this?”
