The pack members around me heard this, their expressions turning awkward. Such talk was certainly hot gossip in private–after all, which member of the werewolf elite didn’t have a scandal?
It was common for the Lunas of wealthy packs to see their Alphas keeping other she–wolves or having illegitimate pups. However, no one would ever bring such matters up in public.
Even if their own mates cheated, these Lunas would choose to turn a blind eye to protect their own and their
mate’s pack reputation. But unexpectedly, this Luna Blackwood was quite different, exposing such things in front of everyone.
Wasn’t she deliberately trying to embarrass Alpha Marcus? They couldn’t afford to offend someone with the
Blackwood name, yet they didn’t dare to say anything.
Only the Head of Howell Family stepped forward to smooth things over, joking, “Luna Blackwood is quite humorous, just kidding with everyone.”
Everyone knew full well whether it was a joke or not, but they played along. After the crowd dispersed,
Marcus put down his wine glass, stepped in front of me, and said, “You know Oliver’s situation. Why would
you say that?”
“I’m telling the truth,” I said, crossing my arms. “Your Blackwood family wants an heir. Wouldn’t it be fine if you just adopted Oliver?”

His chest heaved suddenly, but his face remained calm. “Back then, I never thought you would misunderstand my relationship with him.”
I looked at him and smiled faintly. “None of that matters anymore.”
My smile vanished as I glanced around. “This gathering is boring. I’m going back.”
I moved past Marcus, but just as I was about to leave, he suddenly grabbed my arm. “I’ll go back with you.”
I didn’t answer. After a quick word with the Head of Howell Family, Marcus left the pack gathering early.
I dawdled behind him as we walked out of the building, my mind elsewhere. I had deliberately embarrassed
him in public, expecting him to fly into a rage.
In the past, whenever Sophia Rivers/or her son was involved, didn’t he always accuse me? Lost in thought, I
didn’t notice him stop and bumped right into his back.
Marcus turned, his hands instantly moving to my waist to steady me. His gaze was deep. “I know you were
trying to embarrass me, but there’s really no need.”
I froze, then pushed him away with a sarcastic laugh. “Marcus, I really don’t understand you. My parents died because of Sophia Rivers, and David is still in a coma because of her.”

“You always say you want to make it up to me, but if you really wanted to, you should be using every means possible to make Sophia Rivers pay the price, not wasting your efforts on me, right?”
Marcus’s thin lips pressed together as he fell silent. Seeing his reaction, I had already guessed the answer-
he couldn’t bear to do it.
“Right,” I sneered, “after all, she’s the she–wolf you loved for ten years. How could you bear to-”
“It’s not because of that,” Marcus cut in, his face dark and stormy.
“Then what is it for?”
His deep eyes stared at me. “Give me some time.”
I remained unimpressed and turned to get into the car. As I closed the door, his lips tightened, and the light in his eyes dimmed.
The next day, I woke up early and, passing by the Moonhaven Kitchen, saw Marcus placing breakfast on the
table.
“Eat breakfast first,” he said.
I stopped, my eyes falling on the pasta he had made. I didn’t refuse. I sat at the table, picked up a fork, and
took a bite.
He took off his apron, set it aside, and sat down opposite me. “How’s the taste?”
I poured a glass of warm water and took a sip. “You learned to cook like this for Sophia Rivers, didn’t you?”
The smile on his lips stiffened and then faded. “I’ve told you I don’t like sweet flavors. Oh, right, Alpha Marcus
remembers Miss Rivers‘ taste, how could he possibly remember mine?”
I put down my fork and knife, wiped my hands with a napkin, and didn’t touch the pasta agair Marcus said
nothing, but suddenly stood up.
I waited for him to explode, but he simply picked up my plate, walked to the trash can, and dumped the food
out.
I was stunned. Marcus offered a faint smile. “You like a lighter flavor, is that right? I’ll make you a new one.”
As he turned toward the kitchen, my hands clenched, and I rose to my feet, shouting, “Marcus Blackwood, I’m not eating breakfast you make! You don’t need to make it for me!”
He paused for a moment, then continued as if he hadn’t heard. “Eat breakfast before you go to work.”
I swept the tableware off the table with a crash. Marcus immediately came out of the kitchen.
Seeing the shards on the floor, he came over and opened my palm. “Are you hurt?”
The noise also startled Amber Stone and the Elite Guards. They came in, saw the mess, and Amber hesitated
before they all retreated.
I bit my lip, pulled my hand back, and looked away. Marcus knew I was venting. His voice was husky. “You can take it out on me, just don’t hurt yourself.”
I didn’t argue with him anymore; I simply gave in. No matter how I resisted, he maintained an unbothered
attitude.
So, I decided to stop resisting. I wanted to see just how far he would indulge me.

Soon after arriving at the institute, I received a call from Professor Theodore Ashworth at the Steel Ascent. Professor Ashworth informed me that Professor Andrew Kelly’s team had joined the nanotherapy project and would be arriving in the Northern Territory next week, asking me to attend the meeting with them.
I had only met Professor Kelly once and hadn’t spoken much with him, but I knew that his involvement would be a significant boost for future medical technology. I agreed.
The elevator doors opened, and as I was about to step in, I looked up and met Hugo Ashworth’s gaze. I paused for a second, then stood beside him and greeted him, “Hugo.”
Hugo pressed the button. “You’ll be assisting me with my consultations this afternoon.”
“Me?” I pointed at myself. “Don’t you have your own assistant?”
“He took leave.”
“Leave? Is he sick?”
“A blind date.”
“…” I said, “Oh,” then after a few seconds, “Why me?”
Hugo said nonchalantly, “As a specially–appointed expert, I can designate any assistant. You’re new, so ! picked you.”
I forced a smile. “I’m so grateful to you.”
“You’re welcome.”

As Hugo and I walked out of the elevator, we ran into Jane Porter. I froze. I was aware that Jane had feelings for Hugo, and having just become friends with her, I didn’t want any misunderstandings.
I walked over to Jane. “We just happened to run into each other.”
Jane pursed her lips and glanced at Hugo, who was looking at his phone, oblivious. “Hey, you don’t actually have to explain to me,” Jane said, patting my shoulder. “I trust that you’re not that kind of person.”
I lifted my chin and pointed at him. “But he assigned me to assist his consultations this afternoon. It’s too much. I’m a department director, after all.”
Jane was surprised. “You’re not willing?”
“I could die of boredom talking to him. How about you go instead?” I nudged her shoulder, but Jane shook her head. “I’ll pass. I have even less to say to Hugo. I never know what to say when I’m around him.”
Just then, Hugo stood behind us, his gaze deep. “I can hear you.”
His words made both she–wolves jump as if we’d been caught doing something wrong. Jane abandoned me and “fled for her life.”
I gritted my teeth, smiled at Hugo, and changed the subject. “What time are your consultations this afternoon?”
He leaned in slightly, but not too close, and I could faintly smell the light scent of perfume on his clothes. “Don’t you have my contact? Wait for the notification.”
Before I could react, Hugo walked past me and strode away.
