Chapter 246
But after meeting her, Jeremy realized she was totally not the girl everyone made her out to be.
If Emily and he were both “switched at birth fakes” in their families, then deep down, Lydia was just like him. They would stop at nothing to seize fortune and glory, utterly selfish and self-centered.
Jeremy was very self-aware and didn’t think there was anything wrong with being described that way. In fact, he was quite proud of it. If he hadn’t been selfish enough, he wouldn’t be living a good life.
Compared to the tricks he’d pulled on the Windrose family, Lydia’s little schemes were honestly child’s play. ‘Seriously, how dumb do the Bennetts have to be to actually fall for this crap?’ Jeremy thought.
Jeremy wasn’t about to play the hero and warn the Bennett family, nor did he have any interest in bothering to blow Lydia’s cover. He just played along with her little smear campaign against Emily, acting all noncommittal.
To Lydia, it was obvious that Jeremy didn’t buy a single word she said and was on Emily’s side. Lydia’s face twisted, and she wanted to say even more to drag Emily through the mud, to make Emily look like absolute trash in his eyes.
But with Emma still there, and after everything she’d already said, pushing it any further might just backfire on her.
Lydia had no choice but to push down her nerves and take the initiative to ask Jeremy for his contact info. She claimed it was just so she could act as a messenger between him and Emily.
Jeremy acted like he was completely oblivious to her little scheme, readily agreeing and even putting on a grateful face. “Ms. Bennett, you’re honestly the softest-hearted, kindest person I’ve ever met. It’s truly my good fortune to know you.”
Lydia ducked her head shyly, a rosy blush creeping up her cheeks, looking every bit the picture of a girl flustered by his praise. Seeing that, Jeremy smiled, and he became even more gentle.
He knew he had both the status and the looks to turn heads, but he was also well aware he wasn’t so irresistible that someone would shamelessly throw themselves at him after just one meeting.
Lydia was just trying to snatch Emily’s spotlight. Just like back then, when that loser Zack insisted on coming back to the Windrose family, trying to steal what belonged to him.
Jeremy wore a gentle smile, while Lydia lowered her head, cheeks flushed with shy embarrassment. Anyone who didn’t know the truth would probably think they were a pair of lovebirds caught up in romance.
Emma, standing off to the side, couldn’t help but frown, her expression clearly unhappy. But with Jeremy still present, and for Lydia’s sake, she held her tongue and said nothing.
It wasn’t until Jeremy left that Emma whispered to Lydia, “Lydia, he may look like a perfect gentleman, but I just feel like he’s dangerous underneath. He can’t even compare to Vincent. You shouldn’t get too close to him.”
Even though there was no one else around to overhear, Emma still softened her words, not wanting to embarrass Lydia.
Lydia, of course, understood exactly what her mom meant. She smiled and said, “Mom, don’t worry. Vincent is the only one in my heart.
“The only reason I even talked to Mr. Windrose was for Emily’s sake. Otherwise, there’s no way I’d do something as embarrassing as asking a guy for his contact info.”
“That idiot woman got it right. Jeremy might look like a perfect gentleman, but he’s just a monster, Lydia thought. ‘And he’s even more vicious and cold-blooded than that.’
