But Emma couldn’t hold back and retorted, “If Emily hadn’t been so immature and always picking on Lydia, why would we have sent her to St. Gabriel Reform Academy to learn some discipline?
“In my heart, Lydia and Emily are both my daughters. It hurt me deeply to send Emily away. Jeremy, what you said just now is out of line.” Jeremy didn’t argue with her. Instead, the smirk on his lips grew even more mocking.
Even though Jeremy couldn’t resist taking a couple of digs, that was someone else’s family business, and he wasn’t about to meddle. So, he just smiled and nodded. “Whatever you say, Mrs. Bennett.”
All along, Emily just kept quiet. She knew perfectly well that Jeremy wasn’t standing up for her. He was only doing it for his
own reasons.
In Jeremy’s eyes, the two of them were just fake heiresses and heirs from wealthy families. But in her case, it was just a hospital mix-up. As for Jeremy, he’d been switched on purpose.
Seeing Jeremy’s attitude mellow out, Emma felt satisfied. Lydia was still nestled in Emma’s arms, but her eyes kept glancing back and forth between Jeremy and Emily, sizing them up.
Then, as if something had just occurred to her, she put on a delicate, fragile act and asked, “Mr. Windrose and Emily, you two look pretty familiar with each other. Did you know each other before?”
Emily thought Lydia’s question was a bit odd. She gave Lydia a searching look and noticed a flicker of tension in her eyes. What is she so nervous about?’ she wondered.
Jeremy, on the other hand, didn’t seem to notice anything strange about Lydia’s question. “I’ve heard of Ms. Harper before, but this is actually the first time we’ve met in person.”
He turned to Emily with a bright smile. “Ms. Harper is a very clever woman, and I admire that. It’s just a pity she seems to have some kind of misunderstanding about me.”
Lydia’s expression visibly stiffened for a moment, and Emily, who had been watching her the whole time, definitely caught

After thinking for a moment, Emily asked Jeremy, “Weren’t you just inviting me to dinner-a moment ago? Since you think there’s some misunderstanding between us, why don’t we find a time to sit down and clear the air?”
Jeremy raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by her sudden change of heart. He gave Emily a puzzled look, not sure what was behind her sudden change. They exchanged contact info right then and there and made plans for dinner.
Lydia, who had witnessed the whole exchange, was tense. Her grip tightened, and her face grew even more anxious.
Emily had been watching her the entire time, so of course, she caught that reaction, and it only made her even more puzzled.
