Chapter 247

Emma let out a sigh of relief when Lydia sounded so certain. She didn’t find Lydia’s reason for “doing it for Emily” strange or unbelievable at all.

Deep down, she felt even more sorry for Lydia. “Lydia, you should think about yourself more. You always give in to Emily, but she never appreciates it. She even picks on you all the time.”

Lydia shook her head with a smile. “Mom, I don’t mind.” But her pale face and glistening eyes told a different story.

As expected, Emma felt even more sorry for her. She pulled Lydia into a hug and patted her back. “You look so weak. Are you feeling unwell again?

“Emily is like a walking jinx. You’re only in such poor health because of her in the first place, and even coming to the hospital for a check-up, she manages to make you sick with anger. She’s just so disappointing.”

Lydia had always been in poor health. After she returned to the Bennett family, it took years of care from a dedicated nutritionist before she finally got better. But Emily had only just come back, and Lydia had gotten sick several times.

Seeing how furious Emma looked, like she was ready to march over and give Emily a piece of her mind, Lydia smiled.

Lydia’s pale face wasn’t because she was sick; it was because, even after she’d done everything to push Emily down, Jeremy still managed to notice her. That was what got under Lydia’s skin.

But of course, Lydia wasn’t about to explain any of that to Emma. After all, the whole reason she was acting unwell this time was to get money out of the Bennett family.

Every time she had a “relapse”, the Bennett family would feel guilty about the sufferings she endured. Then she played it up and milked their guilt, for all it was worth, getting all kinds of perks and favors from them.

So, the more guilty Emma felt about her and the more she resented Emily, the more it worked in Lydia’s favor.

Lydia hung her head, looking all sad and aggrieved, not bothering to protest against Emma’s words. But a shadow flickered in her eyes for a split second.

Every time she faked a “relapse,” it took a lot of scheming. It was a hassle, and there was always the risk of being exposed. That’s why she didn’t try that in over a year. But at that time, she was strapped for cash.

She was used to spending money like water and barely had any savings left. To send Cale abroad, she’d drained every last cent she had.

And Cale told her he’d already bought his ticket and was ready to leave, but then turned right around and blew all the money gambling. After losing it all, he came begging her for more cash.

He even threatened her, saying that if she didn’t give him the money, he’d just show up at the Bennett residence and make a

scene.

Lydia still hadn’t figured out what kind of dirt Emily had managed to dig up. If Cale came looking for her at the Bennett residence, she would be in trouble.

Left with no other option, Lydia could only pretend to be sick and scam some cash out of the Bennett family. But as soon as she got to the hospital, she’d walk right into Jeremy talking to Emily, acting all gentle and friendly.

The look in his eyes as he gazed at Emily was full of undisguised curiosity and interest. Lydia would never let Jeremy anywhere near Emily. Vincent belonged to her, and Jeremy was going to be hers, too.

With that in mind, she quickly interrupted Emma, who was still busy comparing her to Emily and complaining about how greedy, rebellious, and vicious Emily was.
