Chapter 285

Chapter 285

The lawyer seemed moved by the bond between Charles and Emily.

He let out a soft sigh and said, “Charles once told me that if I ever handed these things over to you, you probably wouldn’t accept them, and would even insist I donate everything in his name instead.

“That’s why he specifically instructed me that, when the time came to donate these things, I had to do it under your name, Ms. Harper. He just wanted to do one last thing for you.”

The lawyer continued, “These things were originally meant as a gift for your eighteenth birthday, but after everything that happened, he held onto them all this time, just so you wouldn’t feel out of place in the Bennett Family.”

After explaining all this, the lawyer gathered up the contract and pen from the table and quietly left.

The moment the door closed, Emily’s emotions, which she had been holding back for so long, finally broke free. “Grandpa Charles-”

Her tears streamed down in big, heavy drops, her voice choked with suppressed sobs of pain.

Austin felt a sharp pain in his chest watching her. He couldn’t help but reach out, pulling her into his arms and gently patting her back. “Go ahead and cry, Emily. If your heart hurts, just let it out. I’ll always be here for you.”

His words were like opening the floodgates, and Emily could no longer hold back. She broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. Her cries were heart-wrenching, tearing straight through the silence.

Ever since Charles passed away, she’d been wound so tight, afraid to let herself break down. Especially after the funeral, it was like she’d been holding her breath, stuck in limbo, never able to let it out.

But now, at that moment, she finally let go, letting the tidal wave of grief swallow her whole.

Her sobs turned raw and hoarse, the kind of sound that could break anyone’s heart and bring tears to their eyes.

She had no idea how long she had cried. Eventually, her sobs faded, and she drifted off to sleep, completely exhausted.

Emily had been wound so tight these past few days, like a string stretched to its limit. Now that the tension finally snapped, and with nothing left to hold her up, she crashed, falling sick almost right away.

Naturally, the whole plan to look for the donor had to be put on hold.

Lydia had no idea about Emily’s plans or where she was, but she did hear from Andrew that Emily now owned 20% of Bennett Group’s shares.

Lydia had spent years buttering up everyone in the Bennett Family just to get 10%. ‘Why does she get so much for nothing?’ she fumed inwardly.

Lydia quickly hid the jealousy and darkness in her eyes, putting on a worried face instead. “Emily has as many shares as Andrew now. Isn’t that going to cause trouble for the company?”

Andrew didn’t answer her. He just kept his eyes down, flipping through the documents in his hands.

He’d always known that out of all the kids, Charles favored Emily the most. But he never imagined that in the end, Charles would actually leave everything he had to her, including the company shares.

‘No matter how much he spoiled her, Emily was still just an outsider, Andrew thought to himself. ‘Charles must have really lost his head with this decision.

real impact on the company.”

She’s not even an employee, and she has no intention of meddling in company affairs. Those shares just mean she’ll get a bigger slice of the dividends every year, that’s all.

But Lydia’s worried look didn’t go away. She said anxiously, “But after what happened with Grandpa, Emily holds a deep resentment toward the Bennett Family. If she insists on getting involved in the company now-”

Her words served as a reminder to Andrew, suddenly bringing back the memory of when their eyes met by chance at the

funeral.

Emily hated him. She even hated the entire Bennett Family.
