Chapter 304

As she got closer, she heard Xavier talking. “Jackson, if it were you, you’d definitely figure something out by now, right? Even though I hate to admit it, you’ve always been way smarter than me, ever since we were kids.”

He let out a bitter laugh, his smile full of self-mockery. “Jackson, I went against my conscience and killed you.

“Even after I found out I’d killed you by accident, I kept telling myself I did nothing wrong, that I shouldn’t regret it. But in the end, I still lost everything. Jackson, 1-1 really do regret it.”

Emily didn’t hold back. “If you hadn’t lost everything, you wouldn’t be feeling any regret right now. Stop wallowing in self- pity, Xavier. This is your punishment.”

Her words pierced Xavier to the core, but he couldn’t come up with a single word to defend himself.

Yeah, he thought, if I hadn’t hit rock bottom like this, I never would’ve thought Jackson was always the smart one. If he were still around, he’d know what to do. And I definitely wouldn’t be here, trying to repent!

But this was exactly where he’d ended up. Now, he truly regretted everything.

Xavier’s head drooped lower and lower, until he clutched his chest and finally collapsed over Jackson’s gravestone, sobbing quietly.

It was just like when they were kids, relying on each other to survive. Every time he was bullied by other kids because of his health, he’d bury himself in Jackson’s arms, crying and pouring out all his grievances.

But this time, there was no one left to gently pat his back and comfort him. All he could feel was the endless cold.

He had no idea how long he had cried for, but eventually, Xavier pulled himself together and stood up, his face pale.

“Thank you.” He turned to look at Emily, his eyes still wet with tears, but now there was a piercing calm in them.

He said, “From now on, could you please visit Jackson whenever you can?”

Emily’s heart gave a sudden jolt, and she was left with a vague, uneasy feeling she couldn’t quite name.

But before she could make sense of it, Xavier turned and walked away. There was a kind of grim determination in the way

he left.

After leaving the cemetery, Xavier didn’t return to the Jenkins residence. Instead, he went back to a place he’d bought for himself.

The house wasn’t big, but it was all his, bought with the very first money he got after joining the Jenkins family. Here, no landlord could throw him out, and he never had to rely on anyone else.

Everything inside was about him and Jackson-memories, keepsakes, the last traces his brother had left in this world.

No one knew what Xavier did inside the place. Until night fell, the tightly shut door finally swung open.

But he didn’t step out. He just swung the door wide and let Sofia walk right in.

Unlike how she’d been so accommodating to Xavier lately, Sofia now seemed to have gone right back to her old, condescending self.

Sofia walked in, plopped down on the couch, and waved her hand in front of her nose with a look of utter disgust. “What on earth did you burn in here? It reeks.”

Xavier acted like he didn’t even notice the disgust in her tone. After closing the door, he walked over and sat down on the couch across from her.

He stared right into Sofia’s eyes. “Is there really no chance for me to turn things around?”

Sofia knew exactly what he meant. She let out a cold, mocking laugh. “Do you really think you still have any leverage to bargain with me?”

Xavier’s expression went stiff, his hands unconsciously tightening into fists on his knees.

Sofia seemed to relish his reaction and kept sneering, “Did you really think you could keep blackmailing me forever with that video Jackson left behind? Too bad-you’re still too green.”
