“Feelings come fast and fade just as quickly. I did love you once–but I don’t anymore.”
Don’t anymore… Xavier mulled over those three words, chewing them bitterly. He was irritated; a hollow ache filled his chest.
He let go of Becky, his face icy and silent.
Becky exhaled deeply.
It was good to get everything out in the open–at least now he wouldn’t mistake her actions as attempts to cling to him.
From this moment on, she was going to live her life properly and raise James well. Love? A boyfriend? A husband? None of that was on my radar–for now.
She rolled down the window and called out, “Randall, let’s go.”
Randall finally got in the car.
When they arrived at Luminous Heights, Xavier didn’t get out.
Becky, however, waved at him; he ignored her.
She pouted and hummed a tune as she headed upstairs.
Xavier tilted his head and saw Becky light on her feet, twirling and even doing a little spin.

Clearly, she was in a great mood.
He let out a snort and told Randall to drive.
At the bar, inside a private room.
Xavier sat twirling a glass of liquor in his hand.
Brendon was next to him, also holding a drink.
The two of them were alone; everyone else had been cleared out.
Brendon looked at his friend, who was clearly nursing a broken heart.
“You had a fight with Yulia?”
“No.”
Brendon was confused. “Didn’t you/two go jewelry shopping together?”
Xavier replied, “We ran into Becky”
Brendon swore. “Becky again? Why won’t that woman just vanish already?”
Xavier shot him a warning look. “You have a problem with Becky?”
It wasn’t a casual question.

Brendon’s heart skipped a beat. He rushed to explain, “Mainly because she’s always hanging around you.. You got dragged into sleeping with her out of nowhere, then randomly divorced–and now you’ve got a kid? It’s a total mess. I feel bad for you.”
Xavier swirled his drink. “Brendon, I don’t want to hear you say a single bad word about Becky. Got it?” Brendon stared at him, stunned. “You’re really spoiling her, huh? Even if she were your sister, this would be excessive. If she hadn’t meddled, you and Yulia would’ve been married by now. Don’t you regret it at all? Why can’t I say a few words about her? Is she some kind of golden treasure or something?”
“She is my golden treasure.”
Brendon froze.
After a long silence, it was like something clicked.
He looked at Xavier and asked, “Wait… do you… actually like Becky?”
Xavier didn’t deny it, and that said everything.
Brendon was floored.
He threw back his drink, then turned to stare at Xavier again, as if trying to see if he’d gone mad.
“Are you out of your mind?”
Xavier let out a faint laugh. “Maybe.”
Too bad he’d realized it too late.
Brendon still couldn’t believe it.
“Xavier, sometimes people confuse their feelings. Maybe what you feel for Becky isn’t love–it’s just a brotherly thing.”
Xavier took a sip, his voice low and bitter. “I used to be confused; I couldn’t tell the difference between the two. But now I’m very clear–very sure–what I feel for Becky isn’t brotherly.”
Brendon groaned. “This is a disaster! Becky actually pulled it off! What kind of dumb luck does she have? She’s done nothing but act out and somehow still managed to win you over. I give up, seriously!”
Ever since finding out Becky had feelings for Xavier, Brendon had been avoiding her like the plague.
And now his best friend had fallen for her too. There was nothing left to do but let the resentment go.
He poured himself another drink and let the bitterness burn on the way down.
Xavier was just as troubled.
Brendon asked, “So what’s your plan? You gonna remarry her?”
Xavier gave a bitter smile. “That’ll be hard.”
“What do you mean?”
She says she doesn’t love me anymore.”

“She’s faking it, has to be! The way she used to cling to you? She even drugged you once! There’s no way she doesn’t love you anymore. I’d bet my life on it.”
So that was it, his buddy looked so torn up because Becky didn’t love him anymore.
Xavier muttered, “She’s changed.”
Brendon still wasn’t convinced.
Becky loved playing games. This was probably just another one–another way to keep Xavier wrapped around her finger.
“If you really like her, just drag her to the courthouse and marry her already. Who cares what she thinks?”
Xavier said nothing.
He and Becky had always been out of sync.
When she loved him, he didn’t understand his own feelings.
Now that he finally did, she didn’t love him anymore.
But that was okay; he’d make her fall for him again.
Meanwhile, in a lavish office, Sharon stood stiffly as Brendon tore into her for an hour straight.
When he finally paused to take a sip of water, it was just so he could keep yelling.
He kept harping on one tiny mistake she made, dragging it out and repeating himself endlessly.
By the end, Sharon was questioning her entire existence–numb, exhausted, and on the verge of falling asleep.
She had already submitted her resignation letter, but Brendon refused to approve it.
She didn’t dare quit on her own. He’d told her that if she left without his approval, he’d sabotage her references when she looked for another job.
She’d been so stressed she hadn’t slept properly in days.
Outside the office door, a group of coworkers had gathered to watch the show.
