Chapter 163: After All, We Were Once Mates

Victoria Blackwood watched her usually proud son become so melancholic over a she–wolf, her feelings deeply conflicted. She couldn’t bear to see her son pay with his life for Elena’s sake again.
Meanwhile, Isabella Blackwood returned home with a sour expression. Her face was twisted with disgust and
disappointment.
Diana Blackwood noticed her daughter’s mood immediately. “How did your meeting with the Whitmore
family’s young lady go?”
Isabella threw herself onto the sofa dramatically. “Mother, that girl is absolutely hopeless!”
She rubbed her temples in frustration. “Not only is she ignorant, but she’s also incredibly foolish. She lacks
any semblance of a proper Luna’s demeanor.”
Diana’s eyebrows rose with concern. “What exactly happened?”
“She had the audacity to claim she was Marcus Blackwood’s savior!” Isabella’s voice rose with outrage. “She’s attempting to usurp Elena’s position!”
Isabella paced around the room angrily. “Can you believe such delusion? She actually thinks Marcus will
choose her once Elena is gone!”
Diana Blackwood was taken aback by this revelation. She had expected the Whitmore family’s daughter to be inexperienced, but this was far worse than she had imagined.
“She’s suffering from delusions rather than mere lack of worldly experience,” Dianá murmured thoughtfully.
Despite her shock, Diana maintained her pragmatic stance. “Regardless of Sandy’s flaws, she would still be your sister–in–law as the Whitmore family’s biological daughter.”
She leaned forward with calculating eyes. “Having a foolish sister–in–law might actually be beneficial. We could easily manipulate her and use her connections to the Whitmore Pack.”
Diana revealed her deeper motivations. “Since Margaret Blackwood favors the main family line, we need to secure our own position before the matriarch passes away.”
“Once Victoria Blackwood takes complete control of the Blackwood family, we’ll have no chance,” she added
grimly.
(Elena Blackwood’s POV)
At a restaurant, I received an unexpected phone call from Hugo Ashworth while dining with Adrian Whitmore. The familiar ringtone made me smile despite everything that had happened.
“Elena, how are you feeling?” Hugo’s voice carried genuine concern through the phone.
“I’m fine,” I replied, trying to sound more cheerful than I felt. “Just having dinner with my brother.”
Hugo’s tone became playful, “I’ve come to the Northern Territory to check on your condition following recent
events.”

I was surprised. “You’re here? In the Northern Territory?”
“I’m actually outside your restaurant right now,” Hugo said with amusement in his voice.
Within minutes, Hugo appeared at our table. He was impeccably dressed as always, not a wrinkle in sight.
Adrian stood to greet him politely. “You must be Dr. Ashworth. I’ve heard Elena mention you.”
Hugo extended his hand with a warm smile. “And you’re Adrian Whitmore. Elena speaks of you often.
I was surprised to see Hugo, usually known for his sharp tongue and limited social circle, conversing so naturally with my brother. They seemed to find common ground immediately.
“Elena is fortunate to have such caring friends,” Adrian said genuinely.
Hugo nodded with approval. “She deserves all the support she can get.”
After Adrian left to handle pack business matters, Hugo escorted me back to my hotel. His presence was comforting after the emotional turmoil of recent days.
“Why are you staying in a hotel rather than in a house provided by that Alpha fellow?” Hugo questioned as we
walked.
I stopped and faced him directly. “Only a house that truly belongs to me could be called home.”
My voice was firm with conviction. “Living in someone else’s property is no different from staying anywhere
else.”
Hugo studied my expression carefully. “I understand completely.”
He then made arrangements to stay at the same hotel. “I’d like a room on the same floor as Elena, please,” he
told the desk clerk.

Back at the Whitmore family villa, Jacob Hayes reported to Adrian that Isabella Blackwood had visited to see Sandy Parker that day. His expression was troubled as he delivered the news.
When Sandy greeted Adrian warmly upon his return, he ignored her completely and went straight upstairs. His cold dismissal left her standing confused in the foyer.
In the study, Jacob had already informed Samuel Whitmore of his investigation results. The older man looked troubled as he processed the information.
“I encountered her in Riverside City,” Adrian revealed to his father. “She’s been living there all along.”
Samuel’s confusion was evident. “Why would she suddenly interfere with the paternity test? Given her hatred for our family following past events?“,
Adrian’s jaw tightened with determination. “We need to find out who’s behind this scheme.”
(Elena Blackwood’s POV)
That night, I stood outside Marcus’s hospital room, hesitating to enter, My hand hovered over the door handle as conflicting emotions warred within me..
I reasoned that since he had protected me and we were now even, there was no need for me to visit. The logical part of my mind insisted I should just leave.
Just as I was about to turn away, Amber Stone appeared beside me. Her sudden presence startled me in the
quiet corridor.
“Elena,” she said gently. “Regardless of everything that has happened, you and Marcus were once mates
Her voice was soft but persuasive. “A brief visit wouldn’t hurt.”
After a moment of silence, I finally pushed open the door to the hospital room. The hinges creaked softly in
the stillness.
Marcus lay pale and thin under the dim bedside light. His breathing was shallow and his brow was furrowed
even in sleep.
As I reached to turn off the bedside lamp, Marcus slowly opened his eyes.
