Chapter 58 Not Your Sister, Not Sorry

They were divorced now, and Xavier was slipping back into his role as the older brother.
Becky had been an orphan all her life; there weren’t many people who had truly treated her well.
When Xavier acted like this, she didn’t quite know how to handle it,
“Xavier, you don’t have to do this. I’m not your sister, and I never will be:”
Xavier realized she had misunderstood him.
Just then, the elevator arrived.
He led her inside, pressed the button for her floor, then turned her to face him, his large hands resting on her shoulders. He lowered his head and locked eyes with her, gaze dark and intense.
“You’re not just a sister to me.”
Becky nodded. “Right; I’m also your ex–wife. You think you owe me something because I had your child. I get it.”
“But I don’t need anything from you. I think it’s better if you stop coming around so much–it doesn’t look good. Not only will your parents be upset, but I also don’t want to get in the middle of things between you and Yulia.”
They were the classic picture of a destined couple straight out of a romance novel. She had no interest in getting caught in the middle and becoming the one left behind.
She had a sweet little son now; all she wanted was a peaceful life with James.
“There’s nothing going on between Yulia and me–not the way you think.”
“There will be, sooner or later.”
The male and female leads always ended up together
“Becky! Can you just listen to what I’m actually saying for once? Stop making assumptions.”
Becky blinked innocently. “I am listening.”
“Then why are you still misunderstanding things between me and Yulia?”
Becky pulled his hands off her shoulders and stepped back, crossing her arms.
“You don’t get it. You and Yulia aren’t over–not for good.”
“Bullshit! Where are you even getting that from?”
Becky opened her mouth. She wanted to say, Because that’s just how the story was written.
Even if the love story hadn’t wrapped up yet, the main couple was always meant to end up together. What, was the supporting girl supposed to steal the spotlight?
With a ding, the elevator doors slid open. Becky stepped out first.

Xavier followed, slipping out just before the doors closed.
Back home, Becky went straight to James, her favorite little boy.

She watched him sleep with a smile on her face before going to wash up and pick him up.
James was especially well–behaved that day; while he napped, Abigail had nearly finished cooking. All Becky had to do when she got home was toss everything into the wok and give it a quick stir.
Xavier sat on the couch, silent and sulking.
Becky had no idea what he was so mad about.
She’d only told the truth.
This man wanted to keep the woman he still pined for close, all while taking care of his ex–wife who was. now practically family.
Life didn’t work like that.
Yulia already had a huge problem with her.
Becky sat down beside him and said, “Go wash your hands, hold James for a bit, then head out.”
Xavier cast James a cold glance. “Not interested.”
Becky looked to the ceiling, exasperated. “Then why are you even here?”
Xavier stared at her.
“Do I have something on my face?”
“Yeah.”
He answered seriously.
“Where? Hand me a tissue.”
But instead of doing that, a large hand reached out; his warm, dry fingers brushed across her cheek.
Becky wrinkled her nose. “Use a tissue–you didn’t even wash your hands.”
“My hands are clean.”
“Did you get it?”
“Almost.”
Two minutes passed.
“Maybe try a little harder?”
Xavier’s mouth curved slightly; he bent his fingers and gave her nose a squeeze–twice.
It actually stung a little.

“My nose is dirty too?”
“Yeah, dirty.”
“Is it clean now?”
With a faint smirk, Xavier finally pulled his hand back. “All clean
Abigail brought the dishes to the table and called them to cat.

This time, Xavier actually went and washed his hands. When he returned, he grabbed James right out of Becky’s arms.
Grabbed, literally.
With one hand.
Becky, furious, kicked him. “Why are you being so rough with my son?”
Xavier plopped James into the crib like he didn’t even feel her kick.
“Let’s eat.”
Becky shouted, “Eat! Hope you choke!”
Becky pondered. As if this guy actually came to see his son. What kind of father acts like this?.
“Xavier, don’t even think about coming to my place again. And don’t even think about holding James.”
Xavier froze, reconsidering just how important James might be.
Then he doubled back, scooped James up again.
“You two eat. I’ll hold him.”
James squirmed in his arms, clearly unwilling to be held by his biological father.
But Xavier didn’t care. His big hand clamped down, holding the little guy firmly in place.
James gave Becky the saddest, most pleading look. Mom, please save me.
But Becky only glanced at Xavier with a baffled expression and headed straight to the dining table.
She made a point of not saving Xavier a single dish.
Abigail scratched her nose. “I’ll go whip up a couple more.”
Becky held her back. “No need. He’s got all kinds of delicacies waiting at home–why would he bother with our humble meals?”
Abigail gave Xavier a nervous glance. Seeing he didn’t react, she quietly collected the dishes and went to wash up.
The young couple was clearly having another spat.
Xavier knew Abigail had made dinner tonight, which completely killed his appetite.
