Chapter 75 No Means No
Lying in bed, Becky couldn’t stop replaying what she’d just seen.
She rolled over and over like a restless offer tangled in embarrassment.

Xavier definitely thought she did it on purpose. He’d warned her, and she still barged in like a total idiot.
Then she remembered she’d touched his underwear–and still hadn’t washed her hands.
But there was no way she was going back out now. He’d definitely pounce on the chance to interrogate her.
Her gaze landed on the pack of wet wipes–James’s baby wipes.
She yanked out a few, furiously wiping her fingers. Then she scrubbed her eyes too. Her eyes had also been “contaminated.”
In the dark, Xavier lay on the narrow folding bed with one hand under his head, a lazy smirk at the corner of his lips.
In the morning, if it hadn’t been for James getting hungry and wailing, Becky wouldn’t have left her room.
The poor kid was mad, crying his lungs out and kicking wildly.
Becky carefully opened the door.
Xavier came out of the kitchen holding breakfast. When he saw her, his long phoenix eyes narrowed, a sly smile on his face.
“Breakfast’s ready.”
Relieved that he didn’t mention last night, Becky breathed out slowly.
“You eat first. I’ll make the formula.”
She kept her head down, filled the bottle, and quickly returned to her room.
She didn’t come back out until Xavier left for work.
When she did, she found the same breakfast waiting–fried egg sandwiches.
Her face fell. Did this guy know how to make anything else?
Still, he’d made it. And she wasn’t one to waste food.
So she ate it.
Jose stopped by the traditional medicine clinic but didn’t find Becky, so he called.
Becky, now calmer, picked up/
“Becky,” Jose’s voice came through. “I heard you’re on leave. What happened?”

“Our nanny had a family emergency,” Becky replied. “No one else to watch the baby, so I had to stay home.”
“Oh, thank god. I thought something happened to you.”
Becky yawned. She hadn’t slept well. Her dreams had been full of Xavier’s naked body.
All morning, everything she saw felt… indecent.
“Are you handling everything okay on your own?” Jose asked. “I could come help watch the baby.”
“No thanks,” Becky said. “You don’t know how.”
“I can learn.”
“No need.”
“Then I’ll find you a maid.”
“I can do that myself.”
“Becky, just let me do something for you.”
Becky yawned again. “Jose, go find yourself a girlfriend. The best way to get over someone is to start something new.”
She knew Jose liked her.
But she didn’t feel the same. And even if she did, it wouldn’t work.
With a family like his, there was no way they’d accept a woman with a child.
It wasn’t her style to chase hopeless causes.
There was a long pause on the other end.
“Becky, would you be my girlfriend?”
“No.”
Her answer was crisp, leaving no room for hope.
Jose, unwilling to give up, asked, “Why not? You’re divorced. You’re single. Just think about it–I’d treat you and your child well.”
“Jose, it’s never going to happen.”
She actually thought he was a good person–that’s why she was bothering to explain.
“How is it not possible? You’re not even giving me a chance.”
His voice was tinged with frustration.
Becky had never given him one
“I’m not going to,” she said. “You should give it up. If I were you, I wouldn’t waste my time pining after one tree. It’s foolish.”

With that, she hung up.
Jose stood outside Luminous Heights, eyes filled with disappointment.
Later that day, Jacob found Jose at a bar, dead drunk.
“In broad daylight?” Jacob asked. “What the hell happened to you?”
Jose took another deep swig, his eyes red as he grabbed Jacob’s collar and shook him hard.
“Why doesn’t she like me? Why?! What’s wrong with me?! Tell me!”
Jacob’s head throbbed from the shaking.
“Jose, I’m not Becky. Stop torturing me.”

Jose suddenly hugged him, sobbing. “Becky, I love you! I love you! Be my girlfriend, please? Please? Say something!”
Jacob could barely breathe.
“Jose! I’m Jacob! Look at me and let go!”
“No! I’m not letting go!”
It took everything Jacob had to break free.
Jose had passed out drunk.
Figuring he might as well help, Jacob pulled out Jose’s phone and called Becky.
She picked up quickly.
“Hi, Ms. Quinn, this is Jacob–Jose’s friend.”
Becky responded flatly, “Yeah?”
“He’s drunk. Really drunk. Keeps crying and calling your name. Could you come check on him?”
Becky paused. “What good would that do? I can’t carry him. You should get someone to take him home.”
“But-”
Beep beep beep
She’d already hung up.
Jacob stared at the phone, stunned.
Cold–blooded woman.
He glanced sympathetically at his friend.
Of all the people to fall for… why her?
