Chapter 80 Rivals in the Kitchen
Becky widened her eyes with curiosity.
Sharon said, “Because of Xavier. Brendon likes him. And since you’re the one who got Xavier, and I’m your bestic, I got dragged into it.”
Becky’s mouth dropped open.
“That’s a huge bombshell!”
And honestly, now that Sharon said it, it actually made sense.
She had always felt Brendon’s hostility toward her.
So it turned out he was a love rival?
Xavier was attractive to both men and women.
Damn, that was wild. She wondered if Xavier had any clue about Brendon’s feelings.
Becky patted Sharon’s shoulder. “Sorry I got you caught up in this mess. But hey, I haven’t settled the score with you over the whole Aaron thing. Time to fess up.”
Sharon grabbed a throw pillow and hid behind it, eyes darting around.
Becky snatched the pillow away so she had nowhere to hide.
“Spill it! If you don’t, we’re done.”
“Alright, alright! I’ll talk.”
Becky made a show of listening intently.
Sharon said, “When you mentioned that blind date last time, I suddenly had this idea. I remembered how Aaron used to like you back in school, so I figured I’d stage something with him to piss off Xavier, let him see how desirable his ex–wife really is.”
Becky rubbed her forehead and closed her eyes for a moment before replying, “Didn’t I already tell you nothing’s ever happening between me and Xavier again? You just love meddling.”
Sharon pouted.
She still believed Becky was just saying one thing and feeling another. Deep down, she probably still had feelings for Xavier.
And for the sake of her godson’s inheritance, Sharon was dead set on getting those two back together.
“Why would Aaron even agrée to help you with something like that?”
Sharon replied, “I just asked him out for a meal. Mentioned you’d be there, and he said yes right away.”
“Before you got there that day, he asked me a bunch about you. I told him.”
Becky said, “No wonder he said all that weird stuff to me.”
“What did he say?”
Becky gave her a sidelong glance and said, “He started introducing himself like it was a dating interview. Freaked me out. I thought you were trying to set us up.”
Sharon blinked. She hadn’t seen that coming.
“I never mentioned a date to him. Oh, and later he asked me for your WhatsApp. I didn’t give it to him.”
Becky shot her a disdainful look. “Look at the mess you made. Why’d you have to rile him up like that?”
Sharon looked a bit guilty. “My bad. I didn’t know he’d be that persistent.”
Just then, Xavier walked in. When he saw another person in the house, his face darkened.
Sharon greeted him, “Mr. Bolton, you’re back from work. Becky’s cooking.”
Xavier gave her a slight nod.
He remembered Sharon used to have a bit of an attitude toward him–always giving him the cold shoulder.
But lately, she seemed different.
He thought it over for a bit but couldn’t figure it out.
In the kitchen, Becky was stir–frying. A delicious aroma wafted out.
T
These days, the thing he looked forward to most was coming home to a meal Becky made–and to seeing the person he wanted to see.
He leaned against the kitchen doorway, watching her for a moment, then went to wash his hands.
Just then, someone knocked on the door.
Sharon ran over to open it.
“Jose?”
Jose hadn’t expected Sharon to be there. He walked right in and shut the door behind him.
“Where’s Becky?”
Sharon pointed toward the kitchen, already anticipating a show.
Xavier came out and saw Jose. His face/turned even colder.
“Always showing up at someone else’s place. Don’t you have any shame?”
Jose shot back, “You’re the one squatting here all the time. You should be ashamed.”
Sharon silently screamed: this was getting good.
Xavier said, “I’ve got legitimate reasons to be here. Do you?”
Jose said proudly, “Of course I do! I’m here to win her over!”
He didn’t even try to hide it.
Sharon’s eyes went wide.
This guy was bold!
Xavier glared daggers at Jose, practically ready to lunge.
He wanted nothing more than to declare his own feelings out loud–but he couldn’t. He’d scare Becky off.
Frustrated, he lashed out with mockery. “Becky doesn’t like you. You don’t know that? Sticking to her like a leech–aren’t you worried she’ll find you annoying?”
Jose said, “I believe she’ll fall for me eventually. My feelings for her are real. Unlike certain people, who can’t let go of their ex and still hang around, clinging like a parasite. You’re the annoying one.”
“Jose, you looking for a fight? When did I ever not let go of my ex?”
“Let’s go then! Right now!”
“Downstairs.”
“Let’s go!”
Sharon was dying to see them brawl. She ran to open the door with a grin.
Just then, Becky walked out of the kitchen holding a dish of braised chicken with edamame. She paused when she saw the two men squaring off but said nothing. She set the dish down on the table and went back into the kitchen.
Sharon asked, “You guys still fighting?”
Xavier gave her a side glance. “Eat first.”
Jose said, “We’ll fight after we eat.”
Sharon rolled her eyes and shut the door.
Jose hadn’t had lunch. He’d come hoping to mooch a meal, but Becky hadn’t let him in, so he’d gone back to bed.
Now, he leaned over the table, eyes sparkling. “Smells amazing! Becky, you’re the perfect woman!”
Xavier said, “She didn’t make any for you. Go home!”
