I turned my head to look out the window, watching the city streets blur past. “No need to explain to me, I’m not interested in who she is.”
Marcus responded with a faint “hmm.” As he was about to say something, he turned away and coughed, covering his mouth with a handkerchief. The sound was harsh and wet in the confined space of the car.
I noticed and frowned, but didn’t ask anything. Something about that cough sounded wrong, more serious than a simple cold.
Marcus quickly regained his composure, tucking the handkerchief away. “Where are you staying? I’ll have Amber drop you off.”
I stared at the handkerchief clutched in his hand. There was something dark staining the white fabric.
I looked away and opened the door to get out of the car. The morning air felt crisp against my skin after the tension inside the vehicle.
I glanced back to see Marcus watching me with a faint smile on his face. His expression was unreadable, almost melancholy.
I pursed my lips and walked away without another word.

Amber Stone got into the car and saw me take out some pills from my jacket pocket. She quickly handed me a bottle of mineral water.
I swallowed the pills and drank the water, feeling the bitter taste coat my throat. The medication was becoming less effective with each passing day. /
Amber looked at me with concern etched across her features. “Alpha, are you sure you don’t want to tell your Luna about your condition?”
My gaze fell outside the window, watching Elena’s retreating figure. My face was reflected in the glass, devoid of color and looking more gaunt than ever.
“There’s no need.” My voice came out rougher than intended. “Even if I died, she wouldn’t care.”
I paused, the weight of that truth settling in my chest like a stone. “Telling her would only make me suffer
more.”
Amber fell silent, her hands gripping the steering wheel tighter. She knew better than to argue when I spoke with such finality.

I returned to the hotel distractedly, my mind replaying the encounter with Marcus. Something was seriously wrong with his health, but he clearly didn’t want my concern.

Seeing me, William Parker rushed forward and dropped to his knees with a thud. The sound echoed through the marble lobby.
I was taken aback and quickly moved to help him up. “Mr. Parker, what are you doing?”
William Parker looked up at me with tears streaming down his weathered face. “I’m begging you, she’s my only daughter.”
His voice cracked with desperation. “It’s my fault, I didn’t teach her well, that’s why she went astray!”
He clutched at my hands with trembling fingers. “It was wrong of me to be greedy and think about things that didn’t belong to me.”
“I haven’t touched a penny of the remaining seven million,” he continued frantically. “I can return it to Alpha Marcus, and I’ll spend the rest of my life working to pay back the remaining one million.”
He pleaded with the desperation of a broken man. “Please don’t sue my daughter, she’s only twenty, she has a long life ahead of her!”
Seeing William Parker weeping and sacrificing his dignity for his daughter, I felt conflicted. From a certain perspective, he was a good father trying to protect his child.
After a moment, I spoke slowly and carefully. “I won’t pursue the matter of her taking my place, but she committed a crime by hiring someone to plan the car accident, even if she was incited.”
William Parker froze, his face going pale as the implications sank in.
I continued with gentle firmness. “I have no power to decide how the Northern Territory Pack Enforcement Division will judge her.”
“She is an adult and should pay for her actions,” I added. “If you really care about her, you should take this opportunity to teach her that there are no shortcuts in life.”

Hugo clarified with clinical precision. ‘If your daughter returns to Riverside City now, will the mastermind let her go?”
He paused to let that sink in. “Would you rather see your daughter die, or have her lose a few years of freedom?”
William Parker fell silent, processing this harsh reality. His shoulders sagged as understanding dawned.
Soon after, William Parker left the hotel with his luggage, seemingly having understood Hugo’s logic. His departure was quiet and resigned.

I shook my head slowly. “Nothing, it’s just that Sandy Parker has such a father, yet she always thinks her father is bad to her. It’s quite sad.”
Hugo looked at me with understanding. “Thinking about your former foster parents?”
I paused, not answering directly. The comparison was too painful to voice.
Hugo folded his arms and spoke gently. “But you have family who cherish you now, why dwell on the past?”
I was momentarily dazed by his words, then smiled with genuine warmth. “You’re right, there’s no need to dwell on those bad things from the past.”
“Including Marcus?”
