Chapter 188: Considering how many times you’ve let her off
(Elena Blackwood’s POV)
“It’s okay, but the doctor said he was stimulated,” Rachel’s voice carried through the phone with obvious concern. “Jane was worried that if Sophia didn’t succeed, she would come back, so without asking about your situation in advance, we transferred him to our hospital.”
My eyelids twitched involuntarily. The thought of David being targeted again made my chest tighten with fear
and rage.
“Rachel, thank you so much for today,” I said quietly, my voice thick with emotion.
“You’re welcome, Healer Elena,” Rachel responded immediately.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “Rachel, I need you to be careful. Sophia saw you today, which
means she knows you helped David.”
“I understand,” Rachel replied softly.
“She might try to retaliate against you,” I continued, my worry evident. “Please avoid being alone with her or
going to places where she might find you.”
Rachel’s voice was firm despite the circumstances. “Don’t worry about me, Elena. I can take care of myself.”
“I’ll return to Riverside City as soon as possible,” I promised. “Until then, please don’t confront her directly.
She’s more dangerous than she appears.”
“I’ll be careful,” Rachel assured me.
Rachel acknowledged my advice and then mentioned something that made my heart skip. “Hugo Ashworth
and Dr. Edmond Fisher were instrumental in what happened today. The hospital is also investigating the
surveillance footage.”
Her words showed the involvement and support from my colleagues. People I barely knew had risked
themselves to help David.
I paused slightly, lowering my eyes in response. The weight of their kindness felt overwhelming.
“Okay,” I said simply.
After ending the call, I turned around and saw Marcus leaning against the door. His golden eyes were fixed on
me with an intensity that made me uncomfortable.
It seemed he had overheard the entire conversation. His expression was unreadable, but there was
something calculating in his gaze.
“Sophia is not as easy to deal with as you think,” he stated matter–of–factly.
I looked at him and laughed bitterly. The sound came out harsher than I intended.
“What does it matter if Sophia is easy to deal with or not?” I questioned, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “Considering how many times you’ve let her off?”
My resentment toward Marcus’s past actions bubbled to the surface. All those times he’d protected her,

defended her, chosen her over me.
As I was about to leave, Marcus grabbed my arm. His grip was firm but not painful.

“When Adrian Whitmore helped you send David to the Sanatorium, it took even me some effort to find out,” he
said slowly.
His words made me pause. There was something in his tone that demanded attention.
“Sophia couldn’t have known David’s whereabouts so coincidentally,” Marcus continued. “She’s not working
alone.”
I halted completely, my brow furrowing. Marcus’s words were indeed correct.
I recalled that when I had taken David to the sanatorium, no one knew about it. The transfer had been done
quietly, with only Adrian’s people involved.
Sophia couldn’t have known. She would never deliberately investigate David’s whereabouts just to deal with
- me.
“What happened?” I questioned him, turning to face him fully.
Marcus’s expression grew more serious. “I initially thought Nathan Sterling was the only person behind her.”
He paused, his golden eyes searching my face. “But after Nathan confessed some things to me, I realized it
wasn’t that simple. She received Elder Margaret’s money because of pregnancy. But actually I never slept
with her.”
I pulled away from his grip, my voice sharp with accusation. “She lied to you, so you can’t accept it.”
Marcus denied it immediately, shaking his head. “It’s not about accepting it.”
“I’m just thinking,” he continued, “if her approaching me back then was with a purpose, then there must be
someone behind her planning it.”
I crossed my arms defensively. “Why are you so sure there are others behind her?”
Marcus looked back, fixing his gaze on my face with laser focus. “She said she was an orphan, with only one adoptive father.”
father
His voice grew colder as he continued. “But I checked her adoptive father’s information. He’s a gambling
addict.”
“Where did he get the money to live in a wealthy area?” Marcus asked pointedly.
The question hung in the air between us like a challenge. I had never thought to question Sophia’s
background so thoroughly.
“From the past, I simply didn’t want to investigate thoroughly,” Marcus admitted. “But after her lies were
revealed layer by layer, exposing her true face, I realized how wrong I was.”
I remained silent, seemingly lost in thought. The implications of his words were staggering.
Marcus pressed on relentlessly. Apart from you and Adrian’s people, probably no one else knew about David
at the sanatorium.”
I looked at him, a terrible suspicion forming in my mind. “Are you suspecting my brother’s people?”
“Wasn’t it his people who had problems that your and Rebecca Song’s identification was swapped?” Marcus

responded.
His words left me unable to refute. The logic was sound, even if I didn’t want to accept it
Suddenly, Adrian’s words flashed in my mind. He had mentioned that Hazel Green was the one who swapped
the identification.
Would Sophia also have a relationship with Hazel Green? The possibility sent chills down my spine.
Before I could digest this information fully, Victoria Blackwood and Alexander Blackwood approached us. Their footsteps echoed in the sterile corridor.
“Marcus, you’re not feeling well, why are you standing outside?” Victoria asked, her voice carrying maternal
concern.
While saying this, she glanced at me with a meaningful look. Her eyes held the same cold disapproval they always did.
Marcus reached out and put his arm around my shoulder. “We just finished a checkup.”
I was stunned for a few seconds by his sudden display of intimacy. His arm felt heavy across my shoulders.
Victoria stared at me directly, her gaze piercing. “Is that so?”
