Chapter 191: So I’m Sweetheart’s mate from now on?
(Elena Blackwood’s POV)
At the moment Marcus called out “Brother,” Adrian was instantly speechless. His mouth opened slightly, then closed again as he processed what had just happened.
Adrian found himself momentarily disarmed by Marcus’s sudden compliance. The Alpha had actually done it
he’d called him brother without hesitation.
“He is indeed quite shameless,” Adrian muttered under his breath, shaking his head in disbelief.
Before Adrian could retort with something more cutting, Marcus adopted a serious tone. His expression shifted to one of diplomatic formality.
“It wouldn’t be appropriate to visit my mother–in–law empty–handed,” Marcus stated matter–of–factly. “Perhaps
we should arrange a proper meeting for a future date.”
Adrian’s eyebrows shot up at Marcus’s calculated response. A slow smile spread across his face as he
recognized the Alpha’s tactical retreat.
“What’s this, Alpha Marcus?” Adrian challenged, his voice dripping with amusement. “Are you backing down
now?”
Marcus met his gaze steadily, his golden eyes showing no trace of embarrassment. “Not at all, Young Master
Whitmore.”
“I would be happy to comply with whatever arrangement you see fit,” Marcus replied smoothly.
The diplomatic dance between them was almost entertaining to watch. Both men were clearly testing each
other’s boundaries.
Before their verbal sparring could continue, I intervened quickly. “Brother, Mother is waiting for us.”
I shot a meaningful glance at Marcus, silently warning him not to escalate things further. The last thing we
needed was a confrontation outside Dorothea’s room.
Adrian nodded, his playful expression softening as he remembered our purpose here. “You’re right. Let’s go.”
With that, Adrian and I headed toward the VIP ward on the twelfth floor. Our footsteps echoed softly in the pristine hospital corridor.
Jacob Hayes remained outside the ward as we approached. He gave us a respectful nod but made no move
to follow us inside.
I could feel Marcus’s presence behind us, though he maintained a respectful distance. His earlier words about meeting his mother–in–law still rang in my ears.
Inside the ward, Dorothea Whitmore was resting peacefully in her hospital bed. The afternoon sunlight streamed through the large windows, casting a warm glow across the room.
She was carefully sewing clothes for Comfort Doll. Her fingers moved with practiced precision despite her condition.

The caregiver looked up as we entered, offering a warm smile. “Good afternoon, Young Master Whitmore, Miss Elena.”
“Good afternoon,” Adrian replied politely before approaching the bedside.
He admired the intricate work his mother was doing on the doll’s dress. The tiny stitches were perfectly aligned, showing her attention to detail.
“Mother, I brought my sister to see you,” Adrian announced gently.
Dorothea raised her head from her sewing, setting the delicate work aside carefully. Her eyes immediately brightened when she saw me.
“Sweetheart is here?” she exclaimed with pure joy.
I took a seat by her bed, reaching out to hold her hand. Her skin felt warm and soft beneath my fingers.
“You should be resting instead of sewing clothes for the doll,” I said with–gentle concern.
Dorothea’s eyes sparkled as she gazed at the half–finished princess dress. “Sweetheart likes it?” she asked, her voice filled with maternal love.
I nodded earnestly, squeezing her hand. “I love everything you make, Mother.”
Her smile widened at my words, and she seemed to glow with happiness. Then her gaze shifted past me, and she noticed Marcus standing quietly near the doorway.
His patient gown caught her attention immediately. Her expression shifted to one of innocent concern.
Adrian was about to introduce Marcus when Dorothea spoke first. “Oh, you’re sick too,” she said with genuine pity in her voice.
She looked between Marcus and me with childlike observation. “Many people here are sick and wear the
same clothes.”
I glanced at Marcus, realizing that my foster mother couldn’t understand the complex concept of deep–seated silver injuries. To her, he was simply another patient.
Marcus smiled gently, his usual commanding presence softening. “I’m not sick,” he said kindly. “I’m just
playing a game.”
Dorothea’s eyes lit up with curiosity. “A game? What kind of game?”
“Pretend,” Marcus replied simply.
“Pretend…” Dorothea repeated the word, her excitement building. “My Sweetheart loves to play that! Shall we
play together?”
Adrian frowned immediately, his protective instincts kicking in. “Mother, you need to rest. You shouldn’t get
too agitated.”
But Dorothea was already focused on the idea, her childlike enthusiasm taking over. “I want to play with
Sweetheart!”
Before I could console her or redirect her attention, Marcus stepped forward. He moved with careful deliberation, squatting by the bed so he was at her eye level.
His golden eyes met hers with surprising gentleness. “Alright, let’s start by playing roles.”

I watched in amazement as he continued. “I’ll play your son–in–law, Sweetheart’s mate when she grows up. Is
that okay?”
My heart nearly stopped. The audacity of his suggestion left me speechless.
Adrian scoffed under his breath, lowering his voice to a harsh whisper. “Marcus, you’re shameless for deceiving a mentally ill patient.”
But before Adrian could finish his accusation, Dorothea clapped her hands together with delight.
“Okay!” she agreed readily, her face beaming. “You’re handsome, you can play Sweetheart’s mate!”
Marcus smiled warmly at her approval, then looked directly into her eyes. “So I’m Sweetheart’s mate from
now on?”
