“Where are you off to, Ethan? Aren’t you going to stay with me today? What about the baby? She wants you close by.”
Ethan ignored it and continued to adjust his buttons and knot his tie properly. His father was still at the hospital, and thankfully, the heart surgery had been done successfully, so his father could still live for a few more years before any other complications.
This was Ethan’s greatest fear,
Any of his kids are in the same condition as his father.
Luckily, he had been able to escape this from birth, but would his kids be able to? He had a baby on the way and he was worried,
“I have an emergency meeting, Shirley, I need to go. I’ll be back in time to take you to the hospital for your care and drugs. All I need you to do is stay healthy and eat healthy. I’ll provide everything you need.”
Ethan responded but felt warm arms wrap gently around his body from behind. Encircling her arms gently around his body from his waist, Shirley let out a pout as her grip on him grew tighter,
“I don’t want you to go, Ethan. The baby doesn’t want you to go either.” She responded and rested her head on his back with a light groan,
“We just want to be with you all day. Is that too much to ask?”
His hand froze at the knot of his tie, and Ethan let out a deep breath afterward. He couldn’t be mean to Shirley. Sometimes, she still had a part of him wrapped around her tiny fingers and he had no idea why, after all, they did have a history together even if Olivia had managed to steal her supposed place in his life for two and half years,
He turned around to face her, his hand cupping her face gently and Shirley let out a smile,
“Alright, I’ll ask Luke to cancel the meeting for next time. Where else do you want to go.” Ethan found himself agreeing to what she wanted.
“Anywhere, Ethan; how about you take me out for lunch after the hospital? There’s so much I’m craving for. Me and the baby.”
Ethan rubbed her hair gently, placing another soft kiss on her forehead. This was due to the baby. Whenever he heard about the baby, a part of his heart softened up immediately and it was almost as if most of his worries were slowly vanishing, although they didn’t vanish for so long,
“I’ll…”
Ethan’s phone rang, disrupting him from his next statement,
He walked towards the drawer close to the bed and picked it up,
“Luke, cancel today’s meeting. I have to be somewhere important. Reschedule the meeting for next week and ensure to let the group know that my father is doing perfectly okay. There’s no need for panic.” Ethan instructed,
Luke didn’t need to ask further questions. He knew the reason why Ethan was doing this. It had to be Shirley. It had always been Shirley from the beginning,
“Sir, there’s one more thing. Remember, Ms. Olivia is gone, so all of her files and projects are left untouched. She handled some essential parts of the company’s projects with other investors and we need a replacement.”

That name rang like a bell to Ethan. It’s only been two days since she left for a place he had no idea about. Ethan had thought Olivia couldn’t have gone far, but he was wrong. He had thought she couldn’t live without him either, but he was also wrong.
“I’ll see to this whenever I come to the office. What about the card?”
“Sadly, I wasn’t able to find out what county, sir, and there’s no one who recognized her either. She was never really known by the public as your wife, and so it’s going to be hard finding Ms Olivia, sir.”
“Alright Luke, check on my father today. I’ll be at the hospital tomorrow.” Ethan instructed lastly before the call ended,
“Is something wrong?” Shirley questioned,

“No. Nothing’s wrong. There’s just a little issue with the company, but I’ll sort it out. For now, let’s focus on what the baby wants. You should go get ready; I’ll be waiting for you in the living room, okay?”
Shirley nodded her head and once Ethan placed a kiss on her cheek before stepping out of the room
As soon as Ethan walked out and the door was shut, the smile on her face vanished completely and she let out a deep breath.
The buzzing of her phone continued again, and she immediately walked towards it.
It was the same number calling.
The same number that she didn’t want to speak to, but Shirley knew that if she didn’t answer the call, the caller would only keep calling, thereby jeopardizing everything she worked so hard for,
“What is it, Zoey?” Shirley started on the phone, her voice almost like a whisper as she moved further into the room until she was close to the bathroom,
“Madam, it’s Kendra, and Sir Donald is going crazy looking for you everywhere, too.”
“What’s wrong?” Shirley questioned with a shaky voice as she cocked her head backward to stare at the door as if to keep herself alert when Ethan would mistakenly walk in,

There was silence from the other side for about a minute, and then a loud voice was heard afterward. It was the cry of a young baby girl also followed by things shattering into pieces,
Shirley had gotten so used to those sounds that she knew just what they could be,
“She’s sick, Madam; Sir Donald’s taking all his anger out on the poor child Madam, your daughter needs you…” Zoey Stated on the phone but before she could complete her statement, the phone beeped thrice, indicating that Shirley had ended the call.
