Chapter 10
On the seventh day after moving to the general ward, I suddenly had trouble breathing and an irregular heartbeat.
I was rushed back to the operating room and barely survived.
As if by unspoken agreement, I never asked about my condition again.
Patrick also pretended nothing was wrong, comforting me that these were normal reactions.
But I knew, I could feel that I might leave this world at any moment.
Having grown up timidly, I wasn’t afraid of death at all. But now I was scared, scared that Patrick would wait for me in vain, only to end up with nothing.
“Patrick, I want to go out and get some sun.
Patrick was pouring water for me. Hearing this, he instinctively glanced at the machines I was connected to, but agreed.
“Okay, I’ll find a wheelchair to take you down. The sun looks really warm today.”
He wheeled me to the garden. Just as he said, the sun was indeed warm, lazily wrapping me up.
After staying in the cold ward for so long, I hadn’t felt such warmth in ages.
We chatted, from the past to the future, talking about many dreams for later, even though I knew they were impossible.

The sun gradually set, my eyelids grew heavier, and I fell asleep with my head tilted.
“Are you a doctor here? Is my condition really bad?” I looked at the man in front of me and managed to ask.
But the man in front of me had red eyes.
“Not serious, you’ll be moved to the general ward soon.”
I forced a smile. “Then I’ll trouble you all.”
The man shook his head, staring into my eyes with an unusually serious expression.
“No trouble. My name is Patrick, remember?” Then he added, “You can call me Dr. Moore. You can come to me for anything.”
I nodded, looked out the window, and didn’t speak again.
Patrick stood there for a long time before closing the door and leaving.
A nurse came in to change the dressing. She cautiously asked, “Miss Smith, do you remember me?”
I shook my head. “No, do we know each other?”
She waved her hand. “No, no, I was just asking.”
Even though all the doctors and nurses avoided talking about my condition, I could tell it wasn’t improving, even worsening.
My breathing grew heavier, and I often passed out. But every time I opened my eyes, Patrick was sitting by my bed, looking at me with those red, swollen eyes.
I was puzzled. “Dr. Moore, do we know each other?”

Patrick shook his head then nodded. “Well, you don’t know me, but I know you.”
“What does that mean?”
“I mean, can I pursue you?”

I curled my lips, finding it funny. “Dr. Moore, why joke like that with a patient?”
Patrick looked more serious than ever, saying word by word, “I’m serious.”
I avoided his gaze and turned my head away.
The ICU was so quiet only my breathing could be heard.
I freed one hand, picked up the phone on the nightstand, and slowly typed a few lines.
