After finally settling Maya down,
Mrs. Harrington began to plead with me.
“Leo, this is indeed Maya’s fault, but look at her, she’s suffered enough. Please forgive her!”
“Honestly, fate brought you two together. You and Maya loved each other once, why dwell on this one incident?”
“No need, Mrs. Harrington. If I don’t get a divorce, I’ll be the one lying in that hospital bed!”
I walked away without a backward glance.
A month later, Maya finally agreed to the divorce.

We met again at the civil affairs office.
We completed all the procedures.
When we came out,
Maya’s face was ashen, like she’d seen a ghost.
She still hadn’t given up on me.
She said she wanted to pursue me again, to win me back, to make amends.
Ha. Maya’s vows were meaningless.
I didn’t take them to heart.
“I’m leaving now. I won’t ever come back to this city.”
I said calmly.
“You know, I only developed my career here for you. My parents only have
me as a child, and now I just want to go home and be with them.”
My tone was unhurried.
In that moment, I saw Maya’s face dim.
Like a dying bird, lifeless, her smile bitter and self–mocking.
“I knew it. You’ll never forgive me…”
“Maya Harrington, from now on, we live our own lives. I won’t bother you again, and please don’t bother me.”
I cut off her self–pity.
I went back to my hometown.
It was New Year’s Eve again.
I watched my parents busy themselves making traditional holiday food, then looked out the window.
Snowflakes were falling outside, and the scenery was beautiful.
