Chapter 8
Back at the den, Damien gently placed the sleeping Adrian into his bed, then turned and pulled me into his arms.
“Were you scared today?” he murmured, stroking my hair.
I shook my head, leaning against his chest. “With you here, I’m not afraid.”
“But…” his tone grew serious. “That name… Seraphina Croft. I’ve heard it before.”
I was confused. “You’ve met her?”
“Elena, can you tell me what happened during the attack you suffered, back then?”
My body started to tremble uncontrollably.
“I…” my voice shook. “I don’t want to remember that.”
“I know it’s painful,” Damien kissed my forehead. “But if we don’t deal with them completely, they’ll only try to hurt you again. And I will never let anyone hurt you again.”
Held in his warm embrace, I slowly began to speak. “After I left Liam that day, I was walking home. Suddenly, a few strangers attacked me.”
“At first, I thought it was a simple robbery, but their methods were strange. They used some kind of cloying black mist.”
“When the mist touched my skin, it burned like fire, and I could feel something vital being torn from me.”
Damien’s arms tightened around me. “Go on.”
“I passed out. When I woke up, I was in a hospital. The doctors said I’d lost a lot of blood and had strange wounds all over my body.”
“The weirdest thing was, after that, I had constant nightmares. Black shadows were always chasing me. I felt so weak, as if some part of my power had been drained away.”
A flicker of pain crossed Damien’s eyes. “Those weren’t normal wounds. They were marks left by forbidden magic. They wanted to permanently sever your connection to your wolf bloodline, to ensure you would never awaken.”
“If your bloodline hadn’t been so strong, if you hadn’t met me…” his voice trembled. “I would have lost you forever.”
Just then, his communicator chimed. Damien answered, his expression growing darker by the second. “I see. Submit this evidence to the Elder Council immediately. Demand the harshest punishment.”
“Yes, exile isn’t enough. A crime like this deserves permanent imprisonment.”
After hanging up, Damien looked at me, his eyes a storm of anger and pain. “Elena, the truth is even worse than we imagined.”
“Back then, it was Seraphina who hired a witch and chose the cruelest form of forbidden magic. If that spell had succeeded, it wouldn’t have just destroyed your wolf bloodline. It would have condemned you to a life of eternal fear and pain.”
Hearing this, I finally broke down in his arms. “Why? I never did anything to her. Why would she do that to me?”
“Jealousy,” Damien said, stroking my back. “She was jealous that you had Liam’s heart, even if that man was never worthy of you.”
“Elena, do you know how I found you?”
I looked up at him, tears still in my eyes.
“Five years ago, my pack’s Seer told me that my fated mate was facing a life–or–death trial. She told me to leave immediately to find you, or I would lose you forever.”
slip away at any moment.”
His voice cracked. “It was the first time I ever felt true fear. I was about to lose you before we had even met.”
“And then?” I gently touched his cheek.
“Then I watched over you for a whole month. I used my Alpha’s power to nourish your bloodline, to help you fight off the remnants of that dark magic.”
“The first person you saw when you woke up was me. And in that moment, I knew. You were the mate I had waited twenty–eight years for.”
So that was it. I had always thought meeting Damien in the hospital was a coincidence. I never knew he had already saved my
life.
Just then, the communicator chimed again.
“Alpha King, the council has reached a verdict. Seraphina Croft is found guilty of hiring a witch to attack the Luna, as well as attempting to cover up evidence and frame others.”
“The sentence is the stripping of her wolf status and permanent exile to the wastelands, never to return to any pack.”
“Furthermore, the Croft family has disowned Seraphina and revoked her status as heir.”
After ending the call, Damien looked at me. “Don’t worry. I will get your revenge.”
“Without the Croft family’s support, Liam’s pack won’t last long. With all his allies gone, he’ll soon be challenged by other predators.”
As he spoke, a guard’s voice came from outside. “Alpha King, Liam Vance is at the territory border. He says he has something important to discuss with the Luna.”
Damien frowned. “Tell him to get lost.”
“}
“Wait,” I stopped him. “Let me see him. I need to end this, for good.”
“Elena…”
“I’ll be fine,” I squeezed his hand. “You and Adrian are here. This is my home. No one can hurt me again.”
Ten minutes later, I arrived at the border of our territory.
Liam was standing there alone, a large chest at his feet. He looked haggard, his eyes filled with desperation.
When he saw me, he immediately dropped to his knees.
“Elena, please, just listen to me.”
He opened the chest with trembling hands. It was filled with glittering moonstones. “These are the best moonstones I’ve collected over the years. Each one is priceless.”
“I’ll give them all to you. All I ask is…”
He held out the largest moonstone, tears welling in his eyes.
“…that you smile at me one more time. Please?”
