Even as he stayed at the hospital to take care of Whitney, he could not focus. All night, the look in my eyes from the night
before haunted him. It was a crushing disappointment he had never seen from me before.
For the first time, unease clawed at his chest. He pulled out his phone, wanting to call me without thinking.
“Zayn, I’d love to have an apple. Will you peel one for me?”
Whitney’s voice broke his thoughts. He glanced down at his phone, then at her. In the end, he put the phone away. “All right.
I’ll peel it for you.”
That night, Zayn stayed by Whitney’s side at the hospital. It was not until the next morning that he finally went home. When
he opened the door, the house was empty. All my things were gone.
He froze for a moment, then frantically searched the rooms.
“Yvonne! Yvonne!”
He called my name again and again, but there was no reply. He tore through every corner of the house, but I was not there. He
grew frantic, yanked out his phone, and started calling me over and over.
However, my phone was already switched off, and his messages went unanswered. He called my relatives and my friends, but no one knew where I was. In desperation, he even dispatched helicopters to scour the entire city.
Yet, it was as though I had vanished into thin air.
“Zayn, don’t worry. Ms. Rivers is probably just angry with you. She’s probably just hiding to make you anxious. She won’t really leave you. You’ll see.” Whitney put on a false look of concern when he saw how anxious he was.
Zayn did not respond. The dread in his heart only grew heavier.
When he went back into the bedroom, he noticed something else even our wedding photos were gone. That was when he
realized that I had really left him this time.
