The door closed again, and Zina, still confused, returned to her seat.
Suddenly, a pair of large hands rested on her shoulders. Zina turned and met Kellan’s gaze.

“She only said a few words, so why do you look so out of it?” Kellan asked, the concern in his voice.
“I’m not out of it,” Zina replied, shaking her head. “It’s just strange. Did she really come all the way here just to say a few words to me?”
Zina thought, ‘Given Lydia’s usual temper, shouldn’t she at least try to pick a fight or stir up some trouble?
Why did she just say a few words and leave so casually this time? There must be something fishy going on!’
Zina pressed her lips together, her eyes growing sharper and more alert.
Meanwhile, Kellan seemed to suddenly remember something, and his whole demeanor turned quiet.
After a few seconds, Kellan spoke again. “Don’t worry. As long as I’m here, I’ll make sure your acknowledgement party goes off without a hitch.”
His gaze was sincere and burning, and for a split second, Zina actually felt the urge to avoid his eyes. Just then, her phone started ringing, cutting through the moment.

“I’ll step out for a moment,” Kellan said, walking over and giving Zina a nod before turning to leave.
He left in a hurry. Zina looked down at her still–ringing phone, bit her lip, glanced at the door, and finally picked up the call.
Chris was usually calm and steady, but for some reason, he was clearly flustered this time when he called.
“Boss, there’s a problem at the Base. We might need to head back for a bit. Do you have time to come over soon?” Chris asked.
“Yes, tomorrow,” Kellan replied.
Zina’s fingers tightened around her phone, her gaze growing even more intense and alert.
Chris audibly let out a breath of relief. “By the way, we’ve dug up something on that group overseas. I’ll send you everything I found in a bit.”
“Sure,” Zina replied.
Zina glanced at the time. It was about time for her to head out. “If that’s all, I’ll get back to it. See you
