Gabriel froze in place again.
He stared at the papers in my hand in disbelief, teeth gritting as he spat out, “You want a divorce? Amelia, you’re seriously divorcing me?”
As he spoke, he wobbled forward, as if about to lunge at me.

Considering he’d just stabbed someone, I jumped back in alarm and took several steps away as I warned him, “I’m telling you… Don’t even think about it! The police are on their way!”
A flicker of hurt crossed his eyes. He looked at me in shock, tears welling up. “You think… I would ever hurt you?”
I scoffed and replied bluntly, “You’re insane. There’s no telling what a lunatic like you might do. I’d better stay as far away from you as possible.”
Gabriel lowered his voice. “I wouldn’t hurt you. You’re my
dare.”

I tossed the divorce papers at him. “Not for long. Gabriel, how dare say that? When you were giving me only 15 dollars a month for allowance, did you think I was your wife? When you let Angelica humiliate me and trample on my dignity, did you think I was your wife?
“And now you remember! Too late! Sign the divorce papers now. I never want anything to do with you again!”
Unexpectedly, he tore the papers to shreds.

Before I could respond, a group of police officers burst in and dragged him into a squad car.

After he was taken away, I picked up the shredded pieces of the divorce papers and let out a bitter laugh.
“Gabriel, what’s the point of dragging your feet? Our marriage ended the moment you brought Angelica into our home.”
few months later, Gabriel’s sentence was announced. He was convicted of intentional injury and sentenced to three years.
Angelica had spent a month in the ICU from her injuries, barely surviving, but the damage to her body was permanent. Her intestines were badly damaged, and she reportedly had to live with a colostomy bag for the rest of her life.
Just as she was beginning to recover, the police charged her as well. She was convicted of intentional desecration of a corpse and sentenced to three years in prison.
Three years passed in the blink of an eye. Though Gabriel had refused to sign the divorce papers at first, I had filed for divorce during his imprisonment and successfully obtained the certificate.
I threw myself back into work and achieved some accomplishments over those years. Mom’s health had improved, and everything was moving in a positive direction.
But as often happens, life threw the unexpected at me on the most ordinary day.
