Chapter 14
He was taking his anger out on her now, guilt by association.
Hearing his cold tone, Tiffany gripped his sleeve even tighter. She moved in front of him, softening her voice: “I know you’re busy and I don’t want to bother you. I just wanted to promise that I’ll keep my parents in line from now on. They’ll never embarrass you like this again!”
To prove her loyalty to Ethan, she was ready to throw her own parents under the bus. Anyone else would have been disgusted
y such behavior, but he found it satisfying.
What Ethan loved most about Tiffany was that she could never rise above him–she was completely dependent on him, like ivy clinging to a tree. Seeing that she at least had some sense, he softened slightly: “Don’t worry. You’re you, and your parents are your parents. I’m not mad at you.”
Tiffany seized the opening, sliding her hands from his sleeve to around his waist, playing vulnerable as she continued manipulating him: “My parents really went too far this time. Don’t worry–I’ll make sure Pete gets to the hospital and handle everything so it doesn’t affect your work.”
Ethan was at a critical point in his career and couldn’t stand anything that might hurt his company’s stock price. Her parents‘ behavior was like dancing on a landmine.
Tiffany was cursing her luck internally but kept sweet–talking him on the surface, even swallowing her pride to tempt him: “When you get back, I’ll wear that new lingerie I bought–you know, the bunny outfit…”
Her voice dropped to a sultry whisper that made his pulse race.
Ethan was already frustrated from being interrupted at the worst possible moment, and thinking about that sexy outfit made his breathing quicken.
Tiffany struck while the iron was hot, tilting her face up to look at him with that practiced vulnerable expression.
Ethan couldn’t control himself anymore. He pulled her into his arms, not caring that they were outside where anyone could see them, and kissed her hungrily.
When they finally broke apart, Tiffany was disheveled and weak–kneed. She seized the moment, breathing heavily: “Then the police-”
“Just handle it yourself.” Ethan was in a much better mood now, but still had no intention of staying. He glanced at his watch and opened the car door again: “Alright, I’ve got business to take care of. We’ll continue this when I get back.”
Tiffany wanted to push harder, to convince Ethan to stay and back her up, but after a few steps she gave up. She’d already screwed up multiple times over the past couple days and pissed him off–she was terrified of annoying him further by being too clingy.
Inside the house, the police had completely restrained her father and were dragging him toward the squad car.
Seeing they were serious, her mother was wailing dramatically behind them. The moment she spotted Tiffany coming back, she grabbed onto her like a lifeline: “Save your father! If he goes to jail, it’ll ruin your reputation too–you’ll never become Mrs. Thompson!”
She was shouting loud enough for the whole neighborhood to hear, making Tiffany’s face cycle through shades of red and white. She looked mortified, but she absolutely couldn’t have a father with a criminal record. She swallowed her pride and approached the officers.
