Everyone tried to console her, but Selina lowered her tear–stained face. Beneath the sorrow in her eyes, a faint spark of pride flickered.
When she finally looked up, her expression shifted into guilt and shame.
Her voice shook as she said, “Zacharias told me Anne lost her temper because she found out the truth about what happened back then. This is my fault. She probably despises us so much now that even Melody got pulled in and ended up at the police station.
“Dad, Mom, Perseus, Christopher–when we go back, I’ll beg Anne to forgive me. Please, stay out of sight. She might lose control and try to hurt you.”
The moment they realized Anneliese had uncovered the truth about years ago, the Whites exchanged uneasy looks.
But their discomfort, along with the flicker of guilt that crossed their faces, vanished quickly when Selina’s tears fell harder.
Timothy’s brow darkened. His voice came out low and heavy. “She wouldn’t dare. Does she really think she can put us all behind bars?”
Melanie pressed a tissue to Selina’s cheeks, her tone gentle and steady.
“You’ve been through enough these past years. Back then, you were just a kid. Everyone makes reckless mistakes. None of us ever blamed you.”
“Exactly,” Christopher cut in with irritation.

“If Anne hadn’t paraded Grandma’s bracelet all the time, Selina wouldn’t have snapped and tried to put her in her place. And it’s been four years already. Why is she still dragging this out?”
Perseus added, “Selina, stop crying. You regretted it right away and pulled back. The ones who went too far were those thugs, not you.”
Only then did Selina’s sobs ease. She wiped her cheeks and whispered,
“No matter what happens, when we go back, I’ll admit everything and ask Anne to forgive me. Mom, Dad, Perseus, Christopher, please don’t stop me. That’s the only way I’ll feel at peace.”
Relief softened Melanie’s face. She patted Selina’s hand and said,
“Alright. When the time comes, we’ll stand with you and explain everything to Anne. She isn’t cruel. She’ll understand.”
Selina leaned against Melanie’s shoulder and nodded.
But inside, she felt no fear. She felt no shame at all.
So what if Anneliese knew the truth about the past?
There was no proof left. Her whole family, along with Anneliese’s in–laws, stood firmly on her side.
What could Anneliese possibly do on her own?
Selina lowered her eyes, her fingers brushing over the bracelet hidden beneath her
sleeve.
The same bracelet that had brought misery to Anneliese years ago now gleamed
on Selina’s wrist.
People needed to know their place.
The only mistake Anneliese had made was trying to fight for something that never belonged to her in the first place.

That evening, Anneliese had set the table with a rich dinner to thank Jonathan.
When Jonathan unlocked the door and stepped inside, the aroma of hot food drifted from the kitchen to the entryway.
“You’re back,” Anneliese said, timing her words as she carried steaming dishes to the table.
The dining table sat near tall glass windows, and behind her, the sky flared with streaks of sunset.
Bathed in the warm glow, she smiled, looking every bit the picture of a gentle wife waiting for her husband to come home.
Jonathan froze in the entryway, his shoes half–off, his chest pounding hard enough to shake him.
For one fleeting second, he thought if he called her “honey,” she would run straight into his arms, leap onto him, and cling to him like she belonged there.
Then, Zion’s voice cut across the moment.
“Whoa, this smells incredible! Anneliese, you’re like some kind of fairy–tale housekeeper.”
Anneliese laughed at his teasing.
“If that’s true, does that mean I should vanish into thin air right now?”
“No, don’t do that! That would turn into a horror movie real fast.”
Zion waved his hands around in a panic.
If Anneliese suddenly vanished, Jonathan would kill him.
Jonathan finally slipped off his shoes and walked closer. He glanced at the spread on the table and asked,
“When did you find the time to make all this?”
