The soft click of her heels made Jonathan look up. Their eyes met, and she immediately dropped her gaze, focusing on the steps.

She blinked. It wasn’t what she thought. She hadn’t noticed that the silk shawl draped over her arm had fallen to the floor.

He closed the door, circled the car, and slid in beside her.

He glanced at the screen and then looked at her. “It’s my grandmother. Video call. Do you mind if I take it?”
Anneliese raised her head, slightly surprised.
It was his car, and of course, he had every right to take a call.
Seeing her hesitation, Jonathan added, “If she sees you, she might get… excited.”
Anneliese did not fully understand, but she gave a small nod. “Go ahead. I don’t mind.”
He swiped the screen and accepted the call.
Jonathan’s grandmother appeared on the screen. Her gentle face was framed by snowy hair, neatly styled in an elegant bun.
