Anneliese blinked, surprised to hear Penelope calling Jonathan “Jojo.” The nickname sounded like he was someone about to embark on a bizarre adventure, but Jonathan did not look like that kind of man at all.
She bit the corner of her lip, trying not to laugh, surprised that their conversation seemed to revolve around her.
Before Anneliese could even figure out how she had ended up being Penelope’s lifesaver, Jonathan said, “I’ll have to ask her about that.”
He tilted his head and looked at her with a half–smile.
“Want to say hi to my grandmother?”
Anneliese froze and then shifted her gaze to the screen.
Penelope glared straight at them.
“Hah, you’re acting like there’s a young lady in the car. If you’ve got the courage, show me. Let me see this miracle for myself.”
Anneliese remembered meeting Penelope once before, but the dim light and her sour mood had kept her from looking closely.
She had even mistaken her for someone selling flowers on the street.
Now, watching Penelope’s animated expression, the lines of her face slowly matched the memory, and a faint sense of familiarity and warmth rose in Anneliese’s chest.
She tilted her head and stepped into the camera frame, waving. “Hello, Old Mrs. Fullbuster. I’m Anneliese.”
The woman on the screen froze.
“Did it freeze?” Anneliese asked Jonathan, puzzled:

“No, no.” Penelope laughed. “It’s just… I’m surprised. Completely overwhelmed. Wow, the little angel we met that night–that was you for sure!”
Her delighted voice carried through, and Anneliese looked back at the screen.
“You’re exaggerating, Old Mrs. Fullbuster.”
“Exaggerating? Just call me Grandma like Jonathan does. You’re Anneliese, right? That’s such a beautiful name. Which characters are they?”
“‘Anne‘ and ‘Liese. My mom loved anything graceful, so my dad named me that.”
She spoke naturally, thinking of her adoptive parents, not her biological family.
Her adoptive mother adored graceful things. Swans, princesses, or anything that moved without effort. Her adoptive father, Frederick Claude, had chosen the name when he adopted her.
Her features softened as she remembered them. Her clear eyes shimmered with nostalgia and longing.
Jonathan gripped the phone a little tighter without realizing it, his gaze lingering on her face far longer than necessary.
Anneliese didn’t notice, but Penelope, on the other end of the video, certainly did. She thought it was time to start planning a proper future for her grandson.
He was impossible to hold back.
“I will just call you Anne. I still haven’t properly thanked you for giving me that ring.”
Her eyes were warm and kind, and Anneliese thought of her grandmother back in Baytree.
Even though their lives and styles were very different, the feeling they gave off was remarkably similar.
Anneliese blushed. “I misunderstood you. I hope you won’t be upset, Grandma.”

“How could I be upset? You acted out of kindness, and I appreciate it. When you have time, have Jonathan bring you over. I’ll have someone prepare some good food for you. You must come.”
Anneliese agreed, and Penelope hung up reluctantly.
“She’s so relaxed,” Anneliese said, smiling at Jonathan as she turned toward him.
She suddenly noticed how close they had gotten without realizing it.
The air smelled fresh and woody. It was clean and calm, but also sharp and intense, filling her lungs and making her heartbeat quicken.
“She really likes you,” Jonathan said.
He looked down at her smiling face, and his eyes softened.
He felt his emotions deepen and thought a few words silently.
Anneliese’s heart skipped. She sensed something unspoken in his tone, so she straightened and moved back instinctively.
“I like her too,” she said.
Jonathan’s gaze deepened. “You only met her once, and you already like her?”
He clicked his tongue in mild frustration.
Penelope’s charm was overwhelming, and he felt a sting of discomfort.
He had tried teasing her countless times, but she seemed untouchable, completely immune to his efforts.
Silly girl, he thought.
Still, thinking about how loving someone extends to everything around them, Jonathan accepted that Anneliese’s affection for Penelope was real.
