Anneliese furrowed her brow without thinking. Jonathan returned at that exact
moment.
She slipped her phone into her pocket as a shadow fell beside her.
When the first item appeared, Anneliese glanced at Jonathan, startled.
Her pink diamond was supposed to open the auction, according to the catalog.
Instead, an emerald carving took its place.
Jonathan tilted his head.
“They made a small change. The pink diamond moved to the second half of the auction.”
“Oh,” she said, nodding without pressing further.
Her attention, however, lingered on Zacharias and Selina. They were here. Could Zacharias know the pink diamond from their wedding ring would appear tonight?
She pushed the thought aside.
Zacharias tricked her into marriage to help Selina out, so there was no reason he would bring his first love to bid on their diamond,
What she didn’t know was that Zacharias had exactly that plan in mind.
Upon seeing that the first lot wasn’t the pink diamond, his brow tightened.
“What is going on?”
He stepped forward, ready to question the staff.

He had come to reclaim the wedding diamond, and it was gone from the display.
“Zach, relax,” Selina said, touching his arm lightly.
“Maybe they just switched the order. Let’s wait.”
Zacharias‘ face stayed cold.
He fought to hide his irritation.
He had intended to attend alone, but Selina had arrived in Oceaton earlier and insisted on coming when she learned he would bid on the diamond.
At first, he refused.
“Anne misunderstands us,” Selina said. “If I go with you to get the diamond, it also proves there’s nothing between us.”
He agreed. Her logic was reasonable.
He didn’t notice the flicker of satisfaction in her eyes when the pink diamond didn’t appear as expected.
The auction moved fast. Because it was a charity event, the lots varied in value.
Paintings by young artists went for a few thousand, while gem pieces reached millions.
Anneliese, deciding to join in and contribute, bid four thousand on a string of pearls.
Finally, the heart–shaped pink diamond appeared. The screen displayed it in full, showing every detail.
The auctioneer announced, “Starting at five hundred thousand.”
Bids came immediately.
“One million.”

The diamond was high–quality, with a rare vivid pink color, but under two carats and worth roughly one million normally.
Now someone was bidding triple. They were either foolish or determined.
The murmurs died down. No one else raised a hand.
Anneliese looked toward the auctioneer but could see nothing beyond the screen.
Still, she sensed it was Zacharias bidding.
“Three million, twice. Three million… Lot 1 rises to four million!”
Just as she thought Zacharias would win, the auctioneer’s gaze shifted.
Anneliese turned sharply. Jonathan was holding a paddle.
“What are you—”
She gasped, instinctively reaching to grab his sleeve.
Jonathan tilted his head. Anneliese spoke quickly, nervously.
“This pink diamond isn’t worth this much. It sold for 1.2 million before, and the market has dropped. Its value should be lower…”
Before she finished, a deep, familiar voice cut through the room.
“Five million.”
It was Zacharias.
Jonathan raised his paddle again.
“Lot 34, five million. Lot 1, six million. Both bidders are determined. Will the
