The jewelry box was untouched. Anneliese opened it, lifted out the jewelry, tossed the empty box aside, and strode quickly toward the exit.
“Anneliese, wait!”
Zacharias‘ deep, firm voice rang out, and he immediately started after her.
Selina caught his arm. “Zach, you think the diamond might’ve fallen into the drain? I’ve looked everywhere. It’s gone. We need to get the staff.”
Zacharias stopped.
She added softly, “Anne’s angry. If the wedding diamond really is lost, she’ll be devastated.”
Anneliese had said the diamond wasn’t theirs, and he wanted to find it fast to understand what had happened.
He pressed his thumb to his forehead and pulled out his phone, calling Jackie to bring the staff.
Anneliese stormed toward the auction hall. She was just about to go back inside when she bumped into Jonathan walking out.
His eyes immediately scanned her. The look on her face seemed off.
His gaze settled on her right hand.
She clutched the necklace, rings, and bracelet, and a red mark circled her wrist.
His expression darkened. “What happened?”
The concern in his voice stirred an unexpected wave of frustration and helplessness in her chest.

As he pulled back, his fingers brushed against her pearl earring.
The round pearl swayed, lightly brushing her delicate neck with a cool, tickling touch.
Her irritation, anger, and frustration softened instantly, though the gentle touch made her heart skip.
She lowered her gaze.
“Thank you.”
Jonathan’s eyes lingered on the swinging earring. Her earlobe flushed faintly.
He opened his large palm toward her. “Give it to me.”
Anneliese realized she had been gripping the jewelry tightly, her palm pressed painfully against the sharp platinum edges.
She nodded and released it, letting the ruby set fall into his broad hand.
