Anneliese pressed her lips together with a smile, and the tension on her face finally eased.
She nodded. “I think so too. Everyone makes mistakes when they’re young. But honestly, the way you just acted reminded me of someone.”
“Who?” Jonathan narrowed his eyes slightly, curious and expectant.
Behind the wheel, Zion’s hands tightened on the steering wheel until his knuckles turned pale. Inside, he was screaming like a kettle about to boil over.
Of course she meant her crush. Who else could it be?
The question from the boss was unnecessary. There was no way Anneliese could just admit it out loud.
But the next second, Anneliese said, “My best friend. You don’t know her. She’s always teasing Zacharias in the same indirect way you just did.”
Jonathan was quiet.
Zion’s inner scream was cut off like someone had strangled the life out of it.
And also, speak of the devil. The instant Anneliese spoke of Jessica, her phone lit up with Jessica’s call.
“Annie! Detective Hayes found Rory!”
Anneliese’s eyes shone as she heard the good news.
“That fast? Where is he? What’s happening now?”
“Detective Hayes said that after Rory left Oceaton, he went back to his hometown in Riveraton. But he got into a car accident, injured his leg, and now suffers from constant migraines. He hasn’t been able to work and has been living on his savings.
“Apparently, he’s holding on to some evidence from the incident, but he refuses to

“One of his relatives connected him with a doctor overseas. He’s about to leave for treatment in Adros, and no one knows when he’ll come back.
“Detective Hayes believes you need to go to Riveraton right now. Maybe you can catch him before he gets on that flight and convince him to hand over the evidence.”
“Hold on, let me check the flights. When is he leaving?”
Anneliese frowned as she pulled up the airline schedules.
Jessica’s voice came through quickly. “Detective Hayes said Rory is already on the way to the airport. His flight leaves in three hours and twenty minutes.”
Anneliese couldn’t believe it.
She scrolled through the direct flights from Oceaton to Riveraton. The earliest flights still left in more than two hours.
A direct flight alone would take nearly three hours, and she still had to get to the airport first.
It was impossible to make it.
Her brows tightened. “It can’t be done. Unless I can grow wings, there’s no way I’ll get there in time. Does Detective Hayes have his number? Maybe I can try a video call?”
“It won’t work. Detective Hayes said Rory is firm on this. He’ll only talk to you in person.”
Anneliese let out a long sigh. It made sense. Rory had been destroyed by Zacharias.
And she was Zacharias‘ wife. Of course Rory would be suspicious.
If he didn’t see her in person, he could easily believe she was working with

She exhaled again. “Then there’s nothing I can do. Maybe I can fly to Adros once he’s there.”
“You’d need a passport, and that takes time. The longer this drags on, the worse it gets. And you want the evidence fast so you can finalize the divorce.
“Otherwise, Zacharias could cancel the filing, or wait until the period expires, and then you’d have to file again. That could take forever. Annie, think carefully. There has to be another way.”
Jessica paced the floor with nervous steps.
She hated the thought of Anneliese spending even one more day with Zacharias.
If he snapped and forced himself on her, Anneliese would have nowhere to turn

Anneliese knew Jessica was right. She had fought this hard because she couldn’t afford to lose time.
Just as the silence grew heavy, Zion finally spoke up.
“Anneliese, you’re trying to get to Riveraton fast, are you? That’s not a problem. Maybe look at who’s sitting right next to you.”
Anneliese turned her head toward Jonathan, and her eyes grew brighter with realization.

He was a pilot. Not only that, but he also owned an airline.
“You need to get to Riveraton quickly?” Jonathan asked.
He had heard everything already. The car had been quiet, and Jessica was not exactly subtle or quiet.
