“Alright, you turned her down because of work,” Zion said, “but you still left with Ms. Malone, didn’t you?”
“Go on.”
Zion analyzed it with confidence. “All in all, I think, if Ms. Claude really likes you, she’ll definitely reach out first. She might even try to casually ask about your relationship with Ms. Malone. I’ll bet two months‘ bonuses that she’ll text you first.”
Jonathan looked thoughtful. “Double your year–end bonus.”
Good Lord, fortune dropped out of the sky! Zion slapped the steering wheel. “Boss, you’re the best!”
The promise was so tempting, he almost wanted to cheat–maybe secretly beg Anneliese to text Jonathan right away.
The entire drive, he prayed silently for the phone to buzz. And maybe heaven heard him, because just as they neared Maple Bay, Jonathan’s WhatsApp notification chimed.
“It has to be Ms. Claude! Boss, check it!” Zion was more excited than Jonathan himself.
Jonathan’s heart skipped a beat, though he acted as if he hadn’t heard. He calmly finished signing an electronic contract on his tablet before setting it aside and picking up his phone.
Zion, tense about his bonus, pulled the car over to the side of the road.
When Jonathan unlocked his screen and saw six new red dots from his pinned chat, a spark lit in his eyes, his lips curved almost against his will. She messaged me. Six in a row.
Zion clasped his hands together, rubbing them in glee. No doubt about it. The boss is over the moon. My double bonus is in the bag.
“Quick, check what Ms. Claude said! Is she asking about Ms. Malone?” Zion pressed eagerly, already dreaming bigger. Maybe if Boss and Ms. Claude make things official tonight, he’ll be so happy
he’ll toss me a villa!
But the next second, Jonathan’s faint smile vanished. His gaze locked on the phone, eyes turning cold as frost. A chill radiated through the car until Zion’s neck prickled.
When Jonathan darkened the screen with a snap and looked up, Zion knew it was over.
“Your bonus this month is gone.”

Zion froze. “Wha–why? Boss, didn’t Ms. Claude message you?” he asked weakly.
“Next month’s too.”

Zion’s jaw dropped. He shut his mouth quickly and turned back to the wheel. But I saw that look -Boss was pleased at first. It had to be Ms. Claude’s message. So, what on earth did she send to make him this furious?
In the back seat, Jonathan’s mood was stormy. That d*mn woman! Not a single word about India. Instead, she wired me money–five separate transfers, adding up to a million.
‘I looked into charter costs. A million isn’t nearly enough for a round trip, not to mention you helped me retrieve the five million I gave Rory. Please accept this as a small token of thanks!‘
Jonathan didn’t need Zion’s analysis to see what it meant. Even without dating experience, he understood. She had drawn a clear line between them, calculating every penny–no intention whatsoever of stepping closer.
Later that night, Anneliese was ready for bed, but Meatloaf kept pacing in front of the door, circling and whining. No amount of coaxing could get it to settle down.
“What, do you need to go out again?”
The big dog slapped its paws twice against the door.
Sighing, Anneliese threw on a thin down jacket, clipped a leash to its collar, and led it out.
The elevator doors opened, and Meatloaf bolted inside, nearly yanking her off her feet. “Are you in such a hurry? Can’t you show a little dignity?”
She pressed the button for the first floor, the car beginning its slow descent. Meatloaf stared at the panel, then suddenly scratched at the doors, whining in distress.
Startled, she pulled hard on the leash. “That’s dangerous! Meatloaf, what are you doing?”
It howled and barked furiously, so Anneliese crouched to hold it tight, trying to soothe it. But when the elevator reached the ground floor, Meatloaf refused to leave. It sat stubbornly inside,
eyes wary.
“Didn’t you need to go? Come on, out!”
It whimpered low.

“Meatloaf, if you don’t listen, I’m going to get mad.”
