“Annie, do you even realize how guilty you look?”

Anneliese thought she’d escaped the interrogation, but as soon as they passed the intersection, Jessica pulled over and crossed her arms, staring her down.
With no other choice, Anneliese told Jessica everything about Jonathan and what he’d said.

Jessica was dying to know the full story. The suspense was killing her.
Anneliese covered her face in embarrassment. “I turned him down, of course!”
She didn’t even want to think about it! How could she possibly tell Jessica that when Jonathan finished, she ran away to the bathroom?
She pretended to have a stomachache and hid out in there, never coming back out.
Being a gentleman, Jonathan must have figured out that was her way of turning him down gently. He left the room quietly.
When Anneliese finally came out, she quietly snuck home. She’d never been so embarrassed.
Jessica shot Anneliese a look of utter disappointment.
“A big shot like Jonathan hands you a golden opportunity, and yet you turned him down? How did I end up with such a clueless best friend like you? You’re totally going to regret this!”
She pulled away from the curb, clearly disappointed. She used to think Anneliese’s hopelessly romantic side was a problem, but now that she’d finally gotten over it, something still felt off.
“I won’t regret it. Oh, and I’m not going to the dinner tonight. I booked a flight to Baytree for
next week.

“I promised Professor Baltimore I’d help in his lab for a few days, but I got busy with the divorce and didn’t go. Can you drop me off at Astoria University?
“I need to pack and put my valuables in the bank. After visiting my grandma in Baytree for three days, I’ll fly straight to Westrough to meet up with my seniors.”
Anneliese already had her whole schedule lined up, packed to the brim.
Career, family, friends–everything was in order.
Romance and marriage weren’t part of her plans at all, and she clearly had no intention of sticking around for Jonathan.
When she thought of her new life ahead, her eyes shone, and her expression was relaxed and joyful, her whole face glowing with anticipation for what was to come.
She really was the living proof of Jonathan’s blessing: From now on, her life would be nothing but freedom and sunshine.
Seeing her like that, Jessica couldn’t help but smile too.
Her best friend’s happiness was what really mattered. Men were just an extra perk.
After arriving in Westrough, Anneliese soon joined Jackson’s lab under his guidance. The atmosphere was exactly as Jackson described–friendly and welcoming.
Anneliese adapted in no time. She didn’t need any help; she was right at home.
All morning, she focused on her assigned tasks and did them exceptionally well.
By lunchtime, she had neatly recorded all the voltage, current, temperature, and energy consumption data. Not only that, but she had also even drawn up clear energy–consumption graphs.
At first, the other lab members had been a bit put off by her sudden arrival. However, when they saw what she could do, they welcomed her sincerely.
“Anneliese, you’re really talented.”
“With you here, we’re unstoppable! I might finally have time to take my girlfriend out. Anneliese, you are really a lifesaver.”

Jackson walked over with a smile. “I told you all along, Anneliese is great at her job! You all pretended to believe me, but now you’re seeing it for yourselves!”
A senior named Henry West quickly teased, “Hey, look who’s talking. Do you all remember a few days ago, before Anneliese even arrived, someone stocked up on snacks and bought afternoon tea for the whole lab?

Anneliese glanced over at Jackson, surprised.
Jackson looked a bit sheepish, then begged the other seniors for
mercy.
After rounds of playful teasing, they finally let him off the hook so he could have lunch.
“Anneliese, want to grab lunch with me?” he asked.
She was checking her phone and noticed the Whites had called her more than 10 times that morning.
Jonathan had called once, too.
She messaged him on WhatsApp to thank him for the flowers, and he had replied.
Anneliese was just opening the program when she heard Jackson’s question. She stopped and looked
up at him.
