Anneliese felt so ashamed she could barely lift her head, even though she had already cut ties with the Whites and rejected Melanie. The humiliation still clung to her like a weight she couldn’t shake off.
Before she could finish speaking, Jonathan interrupted. “You didn’t do anything wrong, so what are you apologizing for?”
As he spoke, he raised his hand and gently rubbed the top of her head in comfort. “Life hasn’t been fair to you, stuck with a mother like that.”
A flicker of cold light flashed in his eyes. Every word out of Melanie Lawrence’s mouth had been nothing but manipulation and disdain toward her own daughter. What does she take Anneliese for?
Anneliese had never expected that, instead of getting upset or misunderstanding her, Jonathan would comfort her.
She thought she no longer cared about how Melanie and her family treated her, but in that moment, she wasn’t sure if it was Jonathan’s gentle tone or the warmth of his hand that made her nose sting. Her heart softened, quivering with a bittersweet ache. She bit her lip, heat spreading from her ears to her cheeks.
“Thank you. Just treat whatever she said like hot air, don’t take it to heart. I’ll
get breakfast ready right now, just give me a moment. If you’re bored, you can help feed Meatloaf.”
With that, she hurried back to the kitchen, her retreat looking very much like she was running
away.
Jonathan watched her disappearing figure, then lowered his gaze to his palm, the corners of his lips curving upward.
Once breakfast was ready, Anneliese brought it to the table and ate with him.
Noticing that she still looked uneasy, Jonathan said, “My housekeeper extended her leave for another five days. I’ll have to trouble you to make an extra portion during this time.”
It just so happened that Anneliese only had five days left before she would leave Oceaton. That meant she could still cook for him five more times. She nodded. “No problem.”
Jonathan looked into her evasive eyes. “As for what happened earlier, don’t dwell on it. I won’t misunderstand you. If you really had some scheme against me, you wouldn’t have rejected my proposal without hesitation, would you?”

Anneliese fell silent. He clearly proposed a contractual marriage before–since when did that become a proposal?! And why is he bringing it up again out of nowhere?
“I don’t even have any ties with you, and yet the Whites are already scheming to drag you in. If you really went through with that agreement, wouldn’t you be afraid that they’d become leeches sucking you dry?”
Jonathan quirked a brow. “My blood runs thick. You could try marrying me and see.”
Anneliese was speechless. When did he suddenly turn into some rich fool with money to burn? There’s no point continuing this conversation.
“Eat.” She lowered her head and bit hard into her tuna sandwich.
That morning, Jonathan had an informal meeting with officials from the Aviation Department about subsidies for certain routes. After the discussion, he returned to AeroAir headquarters.
What he hadn’t expected was to run right into Selina the moment he stepped into the building.
Selina wore AeroAir’s standard blue technician uniform, walking behind Caden Orwell, the head of the engineering department, along with two other young men in the same attire.
“Good morning, Mr. Fullbuster.”
She greeted him along with Caden, her gaze bright and cheerful when it landed on Jonathan.
Jonathan didn’t look at her, only giving Caden a slight nod. Caden instinctively began reporting to his young CEO. “These three are new hires in our department, all very capable. They just started today.”
Jonathan nodded briefly and strode past, only for Selina to suddenly call after him. “Mr. Fullbuster, can I please have a moment with you?”
