That was yet another mention of her so–called husband. Zacharias‘ handsome face darkened, sharp and fierce, before twisting into a bitter laugh.
“You really know how to make things up out of thin air. There’s only one husband for you, and that’s me. You think saying that will make me let go of you? You seriously underestimate how much I care about you.”
Anneliese felt like she was talking to a wall.
She turned and walked away. She had said everything she needed to say. If he refused to listen to her, she would take legal action once the money failed to arrive.
“Walking away? Talking to yourself because you have nothing else to say?”
Zacharias refused to let her go. He chased after her, his steps quick and purposeful.
It was then her phone buzzed in her hand.
She glanced down and saw a WhatsApp notification from Jonathan. Her eyes brightened slightly.
“My husband just messaged me,” she murmured.
She gave Zacharias a sharp glance, then opened WhatsApp and tapped the new voice message.
A low, teasing, magnetic voice filled her ears.
“Yeah, we are already cruising. The private jet has high–speed satellite bands, using Ka and Ku band technology for a faster connection than the old L–band. Annie, want to try a fun little test?”
Before she could respond, another voice message arrived and played automatically. Jonathan’s voice carried a playful, coaxing tone.
“Call me Hubby again. Let’s see how fast I get it.”
Anneliese never imagined Jonathan would ask her to call him Hubby. Normally, that word would never leave her lips.
But after Zacharias‘ relentless chasing, her frustration with him left her hesitating almost not at
all.

She tapped the speaker icon and held the phone close to her lips.
“Hubby? Did you get that?”

She released the phone and watched the message send. Her heart skipped a beat, and her cheeks burned with a sudden blush.
She clutched her phone and quickened her steps. A cab pulled up just then, and she waved it down, sliding into the seat.
The moment the car moved, her phone buzzed again.
Her heart jumped, and she almost flung the phone across the seat.
“Young lady.”
“Yes?”
“Where to?”
The driver laughed and repeated the question. Anneliese quickly gave him the address for Astoria University.
Once the car turned the corner, she opened the chat with Jonathan.
Another voice message waited. Two seconds long. She hesitated, almost too nervous to play it.
Finally, she converted it to text.
I got it, honey.‘
The words appeared on the screen, and Anneliese could barely imagine the tone Jonathan had used to say them.
She did not listen to the audio.
She dimmed the screen, cracked the window, and let the cold winter wind brush her face.
At the tea house, Zacharias remained in place, staring in the direction the cab had vanished.
The sound from Anneliese’s phone hit him like a lightning bolt.
Her soft, sweet, teasing voice, calling out Hubby, struck him like a punch to the chest. Zacharias felt as if someone had stripped him bare and thrown him into a frozen wasteland.

His mind froze. He could not think. He could not accept it.
By the time he processed his surroundings and felt the wave of pain, anger, shock, and Anneliese had already disappeared from view.
He breathed heavily, his emotions condensing into a single, gnawing suspicion.
The voice on the phone sounded very much like Jonathan.
Anneliese was claiming she had married Jonathan Fullbuster.
Impossible.

regret,
Zacharias could believe Jonathan had an interest in Anneliese, maybe wanted to flirt or try dating her.
Her beauty, her personality, her pure heart, and her simple background made her irresistible
to men.
But Jonathan marrying Anneliese? A divorced woman with a shaky reputation, no family wealth, and no academic pedigree? Impossible.
It was impossible for a man like that not to care about Anneliese’s past.
That voice message had to be a trick, something Anneliese arranged to provoke him.
After all, at the White family dinner, Anneliese had faked a recording to trick Selina and the White family. That hurt their reputation.
She had no problem hiring someone to act and fool others. To fool him.
But claiming she had legally married Jonathan was just ridiculous.
Zacharias forced himself to think clearly. He straightened his shoulders, squared his back, and turned to leave.
Even if Anneliese had tricked him, he could feel the pressure she put on him. He could not calm her anger himself. If she needed persuasion, he would find someone else to try.
