He pulled the finalized property deed from his briefcase and handed it to her. Anneliese accepted it.
She had stayed in the basement with Zacharias, supporting him through his startup. The villa was marital property, so taking it didn’t weigh on her conscience.
Holding the deed, she turned to leave. “Don’t come to the hospital for the next few days.”
Zacharias couldn’t just let her walk away.
He stepped in front of her. “The Goldings‘ 25th wedding anniversary gala is in four days. You’re coming with me.”
“I’m not.”
“Then I’ll have to tell Grandma. Maybe she can convince you.”
His words carried a clear threat. Nishay was scheduled for a full checkup tomorrow, and barring any complications, surgery was the day after.
Anneliese clenched her teeth, forcing herself to stay calm. “Fine, I’ll go. But while Grandma’s in the hospital, you’re not allowed to bother her.”
Zacharias frowned and sighed. “Anne, Grandma doesn’t know we’re divorced. I’ve stayed out of sight all this time. You’re making her worry.
“If you don’t want Grandma transferred, I’ll see if I can arrange a different room for her. And if you don’t want to see me, I can at least keep my visits brief each day, right?
“Anne, we’re divorced, not enemies. Grandma has been good to me, and you don’t get to stop me from taking care of her.”

“Your wife’s grandma is having heart trouble and was admitted here. They’ve scheduled surgery the day after tomorrow. And I happened to notice a pretty handsome, wealthy young man hovering around, trying to curry favor, even going so far as to get the elderly lady moved to a private room.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Leaving your wife behind is bad enough, but if you ignore something as serious as her elder having surgery, be careful–you might come home to find her gone.”
