Chapter 284 Threads of Fate
“Babe, I was wrong. Just this once, okay?”
Jessica stayed silent, her expression tight.

Once they were out of the other man’s line of sight, Jessica twisted her waist uncomfortably.
“It’s just acting, Mr. Shayman. You don’t need to hold me so tightly.”
Zane raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, just acting… though you didn’t exactly hold back when you hit me earlier, Ms. Sweeting.”
“I’m naturally strong,” she teased. “I didn’t realize you were so delicate, Mr. Shayman. Sorry about that.”
Zane let go. “That’s all I get for helping you?”
Jessica muttered, “Thanks.”
“What were you doing just now?” he asked.
She was such a delicate girl, yet she managed to stir up trouble everywhere she went.
Since this involved Anneliese’s privacy, Jessica didn’t want to answer. But thinking back to the burly guy’s fierce, tense expression, she became more convinced that this was the place where Mikita was having an affair.
Suddenly, she turned to Zane with a bright, deliberate smile.
“Mr. Shayman, it must be pretty easy for you to check things out, right? Could you find out who runs this restaurant for me?”
Zane pressed his lips together. “That’ll cost extra.”
Jessica fell silent.
As expected, lawyers could be even more calculating than businessmen.
She gritted her teeth. “I’m just a poor girl… I even gave you my bank card that day!”
Zane clicked his tongue. He had never met anyone so proud of being poor.
He chuckled under his breath, pulled the card Jessica had left him from his wallet, and pressed

it into her hand.
“What’s this for?” she asked.

“The balance is too low. I start at a hundred thousand an hour. That night, you had me working more than five hours, didn’t you? Earn a little extra and give it back to me.”
Jessica froze.
Watching her wide–eyed stare, Zane smirked and ruffled the short hair on her head before stepping ahead.
Jessica clutched the bank card, feeling increasingly uneasy.
A hundred thousand an hour… that’s for legal consulting, not… whatever he was doing that night. With his clumsy, brute–force approach, how could he possibly deserve that rate?
The results of Nishay’s physical exams all met the surgery requirements, and the operation went ahead as scheduled.
When Jessica arrived at the hospital, Nishay was just being wheeled toward the operating
room.
Anneliese held Nishay’s right hand, while Zacharias held the left.
Jessica rushed forward and elbowed Zacharias aside, taking Nishay’s left hand in hers.
“Ms. Morris, don’t be scared. Just think of it as taking a nap–you might even have a nice dream. Annie and I will be right outside with you. I even booked a studio for a vintage- inspired photoshoot. When you’re out, we’ll go and take some gorgeous pictures together.”
Nishay squeezed Jessica’s hand with a smiling face.
“You little brat, you love teasing me so much. My face is all wrinkled already. Do you really think I can look good in photos?”
“You’ll look beautiful! Ms. Morris, I’ll be waiting for you to come out!”
Anneliese leaned in and hugged Nishay, her eyes red with emotion.
Nishay patted her back. “Okay, I’m not scared. Anne, you don’t be scared either.”
The nurse wheeled Nishay into the operating room, and the doctors followed. Anneliese’s eyes

widened as she recognized the young, handsome Carter walking at the front, even through his
mask.
“How… are you here?” she whispered.
Dominic Conti, who had been scheduled to be Nishay’s lead surgeon, assumed Anneliese didn’t know Carter and chuckled. “Don’t underestimate Dr. Chevalier just because he’s young. He has more experience with these surgeries than I do. Just last month, he performed a complex operation on a 103–year–old–replacing the aortic and mitral valves, repairing the tricuspid, and doing a bypass. He set a record for the shortest operating time, and the patient recovered exceptionally well.”
Anneliese had known Jonathan’s friends were no ordinary people, but she hadn’t realized Carter was this extraordinary.
“Ms. Morris, leave her in my hands. I’ll do everything I can,” Carter said simply, his words carrying the highest promise a surgeon could give.
The nurse handed Anneliese the surgery consent form.
Anneliese took the pen, glanced at Carter, and he smiled and nodded encouragingly.
She signed carefully and solemnly. “Please take care of her.”
Carter nodded once more and led the team inside.
“Anne, Grandma’s going to be fine. You—”
Zacharias stepped forward, reaching to put a comforting hand on Anneliese’s shoulder.
Jessica shoved him aside. “Do we need you to say that? Step away–you’re bad luck!”
She pulled Anneliese toward the waiting chairs and frowned. “Why did he even come?”
Anneliese explained how Zacharias had secretly brought Nishay here, but since he had arranged a full check–up and the heart condition was discovered, it was a blessing in disguise. That eased some of her anger.
