There was no need. Anneliese was already his wife, and they had all the time in the world ahead of them.
He wanted their marriage to be healthy. If they grew used to schemes and lies–even well- intentioned ones–it would slowly taint the foundation of their relationship.
He had already kept some things from her; he couldn’t afford to plot in every little detail.
“It’s fine. I could handle a drunk guy,” Jonathan said as he stepped forward, reaching out to ruffle Anneliese’s hair.
Seeing that he was perfectly calm, Anneliese asked, “Is he gone?”
Jonathan nodded. “Yeah.”
Relieved, she let out a breath–only to hear him continue.
“To prevent him from causing more trouble… what if I stayed here tonight?”
Her heart skipped. He… he wants to stay here? Stay… how exactly? Sharing a bed?
She hadn’t forgotten that they were legally married. She had always told herself it was just a contract marriage.
But after that kiss, she was genuinely confused. And on the sofa just now, he had pulled her into his embrace.
The memory made her right knee feel as if it were being pressed against something hard.
Her face flushed. “Stay… here?”
Her thoughts were written all over her expression.
Jonathan’s deep eyes glimmered with an unreadable intensity as he leaned in slightly, locking
onto her.
“Not allowed? Or is it that, just married, you already want to start separating, Mrs. Fullbuster?”
“No! No!” Anneliese shook her head instinctively.
Jonathan watched her cheeks grow redder and redder, seeing the flustered confusion on her face. He stopped teasing her and straightened up.

“Which room is the guest room?”
:
Anneliese’s mind hadn’t quite caught up. She let out a long, instinctive sigh.
“You’re going to sleep in the guest room?”
Why didn’t you say so earlier? Her heart had been racing like crazy.

Jonathan looked at her bright, relieved eyes and the way her tension eased. No desire for him at all?
His brow arched slightly. Leaning down again, he stepped closer.
At 6’2“, the height difference made Anneliese instinctively take a step back until her back hit the wall.
He leaned down slightly, coming closer. “If you want to sleep together, Mrs. Fullbuster, that’s fine… It’s just that in the past two days and nights, I’ve only slept three or four hours. So… well, I might-”
Anneliese blinked, confused by his sudden sigh.
Then, he parted his lips and said a few words.
“I want to… but I can’t.”
Anneliese blinked again. “Want to… but can’t what?”
Jonathan smiled faintly and said nothing. Instead, he tapped her forehead lightly with a finger, his gesture loaded with meaning.
It was as if he were saying exactly what her mind had just wandered to–that kind of thought.
Her face went red from head to toe.
She opened her mouth but couldn’t get a word out.
Even if she tried to argue that she hadn’t really thought that way, it somehow felt like admitting guilt.
And how could he be like this?
Which man would hint at his own shortcomings like that?
Anneliese was both flustered and angry. She shot him a sharp glare, then decided she didn’t

want to deal with him anymore. With a sudden shove, she bolted back to her room, her footsteps thudding against the floor, and slammed the door shut.
Meatloaf followed, stopping at the door and finding herself locked out.
The dog lifted her paws and batted at the door twice, then turned to look at Jonathan as if asking what had upset her owner.
Jonathan’s lips curved into a faint smile. He beckoned to Meatloaf, and she trotted back to his side. He bent down and ruffled her head.
“You wouldn’t understand a girl’s mind,” he said.
Straightening up, he took Meatloaf with him as they headed off toward the guest room.
Meanwhile, in the bedroom, Anneliese flopped onto the big bed, pulling the covers over her head, only emerging after a long moment.
The heat in her face had cooled. She pressed her lips together, her thoughts slowly catching
- up.
Jonathan… just now…
It wasn’t that he wanted to but couldn’t. He only said it because he noticed that she wasn’t ready and tried to reassure her.
That man is unbelievable!
Anneliese shook her head to clear it and decided not to dwell on it.
She had already planned to go to Westrough with Henry the next day, but with Nishay’s surgery, there was no way she could make it.
Earlier that day, she had tried calling Henry to explain, but he hadn’t answered any of her calls.
Now, thinking of it again, she picked up her phone and dialed once more,
This time, it connected quickly.
“Anne? Sorry, we went into the mountains today, and the signal was terrible. Didn’t get your calls,” came Henry’s clear, apologetic voice.
