Zacharias‘ game, his scheme–it was plain as day. Jonathan caught the fire in Anneliese’s face and lifted a brow. “So, some creep was sneaking shots of you?” The hint was clear: nobody bothered unless there was something worth sneaking.
Anneliese wasn’t slow–she picked up the jab right away. She snapped upright, fists clenching, fury written all over her face. “Don’t tell me this was Zacharias‘ setup. He probably sent someone to film it and dropped it on you just to stir up trouble between us. It’s nothing like what it seems!”
The first time Jonathan laid eyes on the clip, he’d been furious—so mad he wanted to haul her onto the bed and give her a proper scolding. She just couldn’t keep it together. The moment he stepped out of the country, she went straight to her ex’s place.
But Selina had handed him that video on purpose.
He wasn’t blind–he knew exactly what she wanted him to think. There was no way he’d buy into the mood it tried to create. Besides, he’d spent that night on the phone with Anneliese until well past midnight, calming her down and getting her to sleep himself.
So, when she started pointing fingers at Zacharias, he couldn’t hide the smirk tugging at his lips. Jonathan stayed silent. “Then, tell me—what actually went down?” he asked.
Anneliese hurried to set the record straight. “Zacharias sneaked my grandma to Oceaton without telling me. Because of her health, I couldn’t bring up the divorce.
“I went to Sunrise Residence just to pick her up–I had no clue he was planning some over- the–top flower proposal. That video? It cut out everything. I said no, flat–out, right there. And those two nights I stayed at that place? The house had already been transferred to me. Zacharias wasn’t even around the whole time. I swear!”
Her story lined up perfectly with what he had already figured out. He’d had Zion dig into the property she sold–it came back as the Sunrise Residence, just as expected. Carter had even sent him a clip earlier.
…
At the hospital, Zacharias had tried sneaking up on Anneliese. Without missing a beat, she blasted him with pepper spray and slammed a knee into him so hard, it made Jonathan flinch just watching.
Jonathan had no doubts about her integrity. There was no way she’d cross that line with Zacharias. Really, it wasn’t about her at all. It was his own jealousy talking. Seeing her so

frantic, trying to make him understand, stirred a strange warmth in him, like she actually cared. That little tangle of resentment inside him began to unravel.
He kept his expression dark and unreadable. “You really think I’m that easy to please?”
She hesitated, unsure. “Then… how am I supposed to do so?”
“Check the nightstand drawer.” He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a low, steady rumble. “Take out whatever’s inside.”
Anneliese frowned, puzzled, and pulled open the drawer. Inside were scattered papers, a pen, and an eye mask–all ordinary things. But tucked underneath, a small blue velvet box caught her attention.
Instinctively, she reached for it.
She lifted it and glanced at him. He gave the faintest lift of an eyebrow. She opened the box and froze for a moment. Two rings rested inside. Nothing gaudy or flashy–just a simple, classic design, entwined like snake bones. His was plain platinum, sleek and unadorned. Hers glittered with tiny diamonds, understated yet elegant. Subtle, refined, perfect for everyday
wear.
She blinked up at him, caught off guard again. He was stretched against the headboard, casual but with a proud tilt in his posture. “All the tools for making it up to me are right there. And yet, you still look lost,” he said, a teasing lilt in his voice.
Her hand around the box felt hot, almost buzzing with anticipation. She lifted the women’s ring, catching the tiny engraving of their initials inside. Her fingers quivered slightly. Jonathan leaned in, ready to ask if she liked it—if she gave even the slightest nod, he’d have taken it and slid it onto her finger himself.
But she didn’t wait. With a small, decisive motion, she slid it onto her own hand, leaving him no room to act. Before he could even recover, she sprang from the bed. By the time he blinked and refocused, she was down on one leg at the bedside, holding the men’s ring in her hand, eyes bright and mischievous, completely taking charge of the moment.
Anneliese tilted her head, eyes wide and sparkling. “Mr. Fullbuster… will you wear this and forgive me?”
He froze, speechless. The lamplight fell across her shoulders, making her long hair glow. Her smile was soft, almost coaxing, her eyes silently asking for him. Something about it—it hit him right in the chest. Had she learned this trick from that scum of an ex? D*mn it… It worked.
Before Jonathan could think, his hand shot out. She gripped his palm and slipped the ring onto his finger with a small, proud smile. “Perfect fit. When did you even get these ready?”

He didn’t answer. Instead, he looped his long arm around her, hoisting her effortlessly onto the bed and pressing her close.
Then, smoothly, he threaded his ringed left hand through her right fingers, locking their hands together. Close and intimate, a silent promise held in their touch.
