Melody turned toward her son, her voice shaking. “Zacharias, tell me it’s not true.”
His jaw tightened as he remained silent. That silence gave her the answer she dreaded.
Both Melody and Lenora looked like the ground had vanished beneath them. The truth hit harder than illness, leaving them stunned and desperate to deny it.
Zacharias‘ glare locked on Jonathan, his tone sharp as steel. “Mr. Fullbuster, you struck my mom without knowing the truth. Don’t you think you owe us an explanation?”
Jonathan had been helping Anneliese move into a chair. At those words, his steps halted. His eyes lifted, cold as frost, cutting through the noise around him.
A faint smirk tugged at his lips. “She didn’t even reach the doctor’s hands. I’d say that was me being merciful.”
Zacharias‘ face darkened, fury spreading like a storm.
Melody couldn’t take his smugness. She let out a sharp wail, then hunched forward, grabbing her stomach as her knees gave way. “Ahh! My stomach! He’s out to murder me! Lenora, call the police!”
Big deal if he’s rich and powerful. That doesn’t give him the right to lay a finger on me in public. There must be cameras everywhere. As soon as I get that footage, I’ll go viral online, bring the media in, and let’s see if Jonathan still thinks he’s above the law.
Her thoughts scattered as several cops rushed into the hall.
Melody’s eyes sparkled up. Perfect. Someone must’ve called them. Maybe it was about Anneliese losing her mind with a syringe.
“Mom, look! The cops! Finally, someone’s on our side!” Lenora’s voice rose, full of hope.
She darted forward, spilling words in a rush. “My mom and I were attacked–look at us! There are scratches on my face and neck, and my mom-”
The lead officer raised a hand, interrupting her with a firm tone. “Are you Lenora Shaw and Melody Zwick? You’re both suspected of causing Nishay Morris‘ fatal collapse and are being investigated for murder. Here’s the warrant.”
Nishay Morris–Anneliese’s grandmother.

“This is murder? How could it be? We only said a few things! The old lady passed out because she was frail, not because of us! Why are we being blamed? Zacharias, tell them what really happened!”
Melody’s face twisted in panic. Lenora had gone ghost–pale.
A steady baritone cut through the chaos.
“If someone is aware that a patient has a severe heart condition and still taunts them with hurtful words, disregarding the potential consequences, that counts as murder under Article 232 of the criminal code.”
Zane appeared, tall in a dark suit, his tone calm yet sharp enough to slice through the noise. He didn’t look like a lawyer, but every word left no room for doubt.
Melody and Lenora stared at him, eyes wide. Only now did they grasp how deep they’d sunk.
Jessica stormed in behind him, eyes blazing. Her hand twitched like she was about to strike them both. “You two are vicious! If Ms. Morris doesn’t make it, you’re murderers. You won’t walk free.”
Zane caught her by the collar. His next words hit the mother and daughter harder than any blow.
“You inquired about Ms. Morris‘ surgery and her room number. Everything is documented. You referred to her as an ‘old hag‘ and stated that she had lived too long. Your intentions are clear.
“When she collapsed, instead of offering assistance, you attempted to flee. The nurse has already confirmed this. That in itself proves your intent. As Ms. Anneliese Claude’s attorney, I’ll be pressing charges for attempted murder of my client’s grandmother.”
Everything spun out of control for Anneliese. As soon as she heard her grandmother had collapsed, her strength gave out. She had poured all her energy into racing here, not even taking a moment to call the cops.
With officers standing guard and Zane speaking for her, relief began to ease her panic. She gazed up at Jonathan, her lips trembling, and finally found the strength to whisper, “Thanks.”
