Chapter 335 Through the Longest Night
Those hurtful words still haunted Anneliese’s mind after all these.
At this moment, they slammed into her like a fist from the past.

Jonathan stared at her pale face, her lost look, and his voice sank to a gentle whisper, meant only for her to hear.
“You didn’t fail, Anne. You’ve done more than enough. Nobody can predict the future, so stop
you and beating yourself up for things you couldn’t control. That kind of self–blame only hurts doesn’t change anything. You’re amazing. Some people are inherently bad, and we won’t let them get away with what they’ve done. We’ll fight for Grandma. For now, just take a breath, okay?”
His tone was gentle, but deep down, his chest was knotted with fear and helplessness. There were so many things he wanted to say to her, yet his worries held them back.
For eleven long hours, Nishay’s surgery was a brutal ordeal. The hospital had to issue three separate warnings that her condition had become critical.
At last, Carter emerged, his face etched with fatigue. “The surgery was a success.”
Anneliese nearly buckled. As she watched the slow and steady rise of Nishay’s chest through the ICU window, her face was serene and at peace. It was only then that she felt the ground solid under her feet again.
After checking on Nishay again, Carter reassured her, “She’s tough. Probably holding on for you. She’ll need some time to recover, but she should be alright.”
She was overwhelmed with relief.
Anneliese spun around and flung herself into the arms of the man who had been standing beside her all night. She held onto him like an anchor, her tears bleeding relief and dread into his shirt.
Jonathan wrapped her close without hesitation, a faint smile breaking through as he stroked her back. His eyes held a depth of gratitude only he understood.
Watching them, Carter’s eyes stung. Great. I bust my ass for ten hours, and Prince Charming gets the tears and cuddles.
“Really? Right in front of me? Show a little mercy–some of us are hungry doctors, not your fan club.”

She instantly pulled away, her cheeks flushing red. “Dr. Chevalier, thank you for all your help. I’ll send you something myself later.”
Jonathan’s arms emptied in an instant. His wife had finally leaned into him on her own, but just as quickly, she was smiling shyly at Carter.
Jonathan’s smile vanished, and his entire presence became sharp, his eyes narrowing into blades as he stared at Carter.
Carter took a step back, suddenly unsure if that glare was about to turn into a knife aimed right at his chest.
“Don’t thank me. Jonathan and I go way back–thank him instead.” Carter rubbed at his nose, backing down quickly.
Anneliese blinked, taken aback by his sudden retreat.
Just as she was about to speak, Jonathan’s hand tightened around her waist. His tone was calm, but a hint of jealousy seeped in. “He’s doing his duty, nothing more. You don’t need to talk like you’re in his debt.”
Anneliese glanced up at him, struck by how serious he seemed. She thought, Come on… do they really think I’m going to repay Dr. Chevalier with my body? What’s next, a lifetime membership card? Jonathan’s imagination really needs a leash.
She rolled her eyes and gave Jonathan’s side a sharp pinch. “I meant a plaque for his office, you jealous maniac.”
Jonathan tensed up. That sharp little pinch sent a jolt through him–sting mixed with heat, sparking something dark and restless in his gut. He’d never realized his waist was that sensitive. His throat constricted, and his voice came out low and rough.
“He doesn’t need a plaque either.” His fingers slipped into her hair, touching her tenderly yet claiming her.
Jealousy churned in Carter’s stomach. He’s not even willing to let me put up a plaque. Apparently, I chose the wrong side. With his stomach rumbling, Carter turned and walked away.
Later, Jonathan and Anneliese left the hospital together, but then came across Zacharias, who was heading their way.
Wind tore through his coat, chapping his face and leaving it drawn and haggard, as if he’d been dragged through a blaze.

Now that they’d seen him here, it was clear he’d already gotten the news: Nishay had made it through.
