“Anne, thank God Grandma made it! My mom and Lenora finally admitted they were wrong. They’re saying they’ll beg for forgiveness and even stick around to look after her as payback.”
Anger flashed across Anneliese’s face. Her lips twisted into a bitter, mocking smile..
“She’s pushing eighty, and that surgery nearly killed her. How long do you think it’ll take her to recover? How much more suffering do you expect her to endure? You really think that’s ‘okay‘? If I stuck a knife in you twice and you lived, would you just shrug and say you’re okay?”
Her words cut sharper than knives, but he dared to look earnest.
Anneliese almost burst out laughing at his shamelessness. “Unbelievable. You never changed. Remember when Selina paid someone to attack me? Because I survived, you just brushed it off, saying, ‘You’re fine. Why make a big deal?“”
Zacharias went pale. He had no answer, no excuse–just silence.
She gazed at him, her face as cold and unyielding as carved ice, stunning yet unattainable. It was as if she stood atop a mountain he could never scale. His chest constricted with the feeling of being so far away.
He knew defending his mother and sister meant defying her. What was he supposed to do? Still, it tore him up.
“Anne, we were once family… please.” His voice cracked, his throat tightening as he choked the words out.
Her response was icy and blunt. “The biggest mistake of my life was marrying you and getting tangled up in your family. That word ‘family‘ was just a cover for all the ways you’ve hurt me and Grandma. Don’t think one successful surgery can erase what you’ve done.”
She gripped Jonathan’s hand tightly and walked away without a backward glance.
Zacharias swayed where he stood. Her words replayed in his head, pounding away at him. Her greatest regret was marrying me?
By the time he came to, Anneliese and Jonathan were already strolling away, hand in hand. Jealousy burned through him, raw and consuming.
A passing car’s headlights caught the herringbone rings on their fingers. The matching glint

He exploded with rage. Lurching forward, he shouted, “Jonathan! Is that you? You’re the one who turned her against me, aren’t you?”
Anne was never like this! She used to let things slide, too soft for her own good. Now she’s cold as stone, like I don’t even exist.
All these started after Jonathan came into the picture. Of course–it’s him. He’s the one messing with her. head, making her change.
Zacharias grabbed Jonathan’s shoulder from behind and swung a fist at him.
“Jonathan!” Anneliese’s cry pierced the night.
Jonathan had seen the shadow move behind him, but he didn’t dodge. His only thought was protecting Anneliese at his side.
He took a hit to the jaw, his head jerking to the side. Zacharias staggered forward a few steps, still reeling from the force.
“Zacharias!” Anneliese’s eyes widened as she saw the strike hit home. Her glare pierced him, chilling him to the bone.
For the first time, she looked straight at him again–but it was to check on another man.
The jealousy ate him alive. His eyes reddened, his voice raw. “Anneliese, you really think he’s a good guy? Jonathan, go on–tell her who you really are!”
Anneliese’s brow furrowed, confusion clouding her expression.
Jonathan’s eyes darkened, his whole presence radiating a deadly intensity. “Shut your mouth.” His voice was sharp, carrying a weight that froze the air.
Right then, Zion pulled up in his car.
He moved to step out, but Jonathan stopped him with a glance.
Jonathan drew her close with one arm, pulled the back door open, and nudged her inside.
Her voice shook with panic. “What are you doing? He-”
“It’s fine. I’ll handle this,” he cut in, steady eyes locking with hers before shutting the door. Anneliese immediately grabbed for the handle, but the locks clicked shut. Zion’s calm voice

came from the front seat. “Mrs. Fullbuster, this is between them. Let Mr. Fullbuster handle it.”
The car rolled forward, putting distance between them.
As Anneliese glanced in the rearview mirror, she saw Jonathan’s towering figure approaching Zacharias. His gait was slow and deliberate, every step giving off an air of menace. His hand fiddled with the buttons of his suit jacket, as if preparing for a showdown.
Her heart pounded. Are they really about to come to blows?
What was Zacharias trying to say before Jonathan interrupted him? Why does it feel like he’s keeping something from me?
