Zion drove slowly out of the hospital, silently lifting the divider as he moved.
“Say something! Was Zacharias… Ah!”

Anneliese couldn’t shake the unnerving sense that, though Jonathan appeared perfectly composed, he exuded a dark, almost oppressive energy she’d never sensed from him before.
The unfamiliar intensity left her anxious and off balance.
Her worry was so sharp that when he remained silent, she almost reached over instinctively to tug at his shirt collar.
Before she could speak, he suddenly leaned in.
Anneliese startled, arching her back instinctively. Sitting sideways, she lost her balance and toppled toward the car door.
Just as the back of her head was about to hit the wall, his large hand slid into her hair, cradling her skull in his palm.
Her eyes widened under the shadow he cast.
He pressed down, silencing her startled cry with his fiery lips and insistent tongue.
The kiss was feral. Her back pressed painfully against the cramped car seat, her spine aching under the intensity.
His heated breath and the torrent of raw emotion emanating from him left Anneliese panicked and defenseless.
She lifted her small hand, attempting to push him away, but he grasped it, prying her fingers apart and pinning them against the window with firm insistence. Their fingers intertwined, and he deepened the kiss even further.
Outside, the neon lights blurred into streaks of color beneath her fluttering lashes, tracing fleeting arcs over the tangled figures inside.
Initially, she was simply shocked. They had kissed before, but always briefly–gentle, measured, and restrained. He had always paused the moment she showed discomfort.
This was different. Like a sudden downpour, an overwhelming wave, she was swept along, powerless to resist the force of his passion.

Anneliese had been tense all day, weighed down by worry over her grandma. She needed an outlet for the bottled–up emotion.
At some point, she found herself gripping his tic, lifting herself to meet him halfway.
Her tentative, hesitant tongue slid into the kiss, and the small gesture made Jonathan stiffen, heat and desire intensifying in his body.
She once loved me so deeply.
She’ll never love you.
She’s only with you to get back at me.
Zacharias‘ words reverberated in his mind, fueling a storm of jealousy and bitterness.
But all that anger dissolved with even the slightest response from her–like a child finally tasting the candy they had been denied for so long.
“What are you…”
Anneliese kissed him back. Only when her head spun and her breath hitched did she realize the dynamic had shifted.
Jonathan broke the kiss, yet now she leaned closer, cheeks flushed, slightly dazed, staring at him.
He pressed his nose against hers, eyes dark and intense, shadows flickering across his features in the dim car light. His lips curved in a teasing smile, voice low and rough.
“Mrs. Fullbuster, your kiss tastes sweet.”
Heat spread instantly down her neck. Her lashes trembled.
“Liar–I didn’t even eat any candy! I can’t believe you…”
She wanted to protest that someone like Jonathan, always so composed and aloof, could be so smooth–talking, opening his mouth with such shameless charm.
Before she could finish, he grabbed her waist and lifted her effortlessly.
Her world spun, and when she regained focus, she was straddling his lap, face–to–face.
He seemed to anticipate her next words. Holding her close, leaning back slightly, his eyes locked onto hers, shadows deepening the intensity.

“Well? Perhaps your kiss was too light, and I misread it. Want to try again?”
Anneliese remained silent.
His gaze was magnetic; it felt like it was pulling her closer, making her cheeks turn red.
It took every ounce of courage to kiss him under that scrutiny.
Yet he clearly relished it when she took the initiative; last time she’d won their bet, he’d insisted she kiss him first.

Thinking of how he’d stayed by her side all day, how he’d persistently sought Carter’s help, ensuring her grandma’s well–being, Anneliese couldn’t bear the thought of disappointing him.
She bit her lip, arms wrapping around his neck, and leaned in.
But her lips never reached his soft lips; instead, they landed on the back of his hand, where the veins stood out sharply beneath her touch.
