“This is my little welcome gift for you. Keep it safe, alright?” Penelope said with a smile.
Anneliese had never seen a present that big before. It was heavy, too, and just the feel of it told her whatever was inside had to be worth a fortune.
After being nervous and unsure what to do, she instinctively glanced at Jonathan. The man curved his lips into a faint smile.
“When a gift comes from an elder, it isn’t something you turn down,” Jonathan remarked.
So Anneliese clutched it close, then turned back to Penelope with a polite smile and a word of thanks.
Once the car rolled out of the villa gates, she quickly handed the gift and bag to Jonathan.
She peeked inside the bag and realized several other presents, all from Penelope’s friends who had shown up the night before.
“Why give them to me? They’re from Grandma, so you should hold onto them yourself.” Jonathan didn’t even reach for the bag. His tone was matter–of–fact as he flipped open the laptop on his knees, clearly slipping into work mode. With a glance, he signaled Anneliese to stay quiet.
She wanted to protest, but in the end, she bit her tongue and didn’t bother him. Left with nothing to do, she gave in to curiosity and opened Penelope’s gift.
No wonder it had felt so thick and heavy. Inside was a check for 8.88 million, along with three property deeds.
One was for a six–hundred–square–meter garden villa in Oceaton’s luxury district.
Another was for a two–story commercial unit in the city’s busiest business hub. Even the ‘cheapest‘ was a nearly two–hundred–square–meter flat inside Halden’s second ring.
The sheer extravagance of it made Anneliese swallow hard. She hurried to stuff everything back into the box, her palms damp with cold sweat.
D*mn, money really does make people’s hearts waver.
With Penelope’s dazzling prospects and Nishay’s kindness, which made her so easy to be

around, Anneliese knew temptation would gnaw at her sooner or later. Two years later, greed would make it hard to walk away.
But the thought of Jonathan’s mysterious first love cooled her down instantly. Just because that woman hadn’t shown up yet didn’t mean she didn’t exist.
Men were masters at deception. Before she learned Selina was Zacharias‘ untouchable obsession, she too had lived in a pretty illusion. Once the veil came off, the ugliness had nowhere to hide.
Anneliese had no patience for men with someone else carved into their hearts. She glanced at the elegant man beside her and reminded herself she could enjoy his company, but she’d better not fall too deep.
The thought alone killed her mood for opening more gifts. She stuffed every gift into a bag, folded the top shut, and decided she’d lock them in her safe once she got home. Two years later, they could go right back where they belonged.
Jonathan pulled up at the hospital entrance.
Anneliese stepped out of the car, and just as she clicked the door shut, the man got out on the other side too.
He came around the front of the car toward her. Anneliese blinked in surprise. “You didn’t have to get down. Go on to work.”
She already felt guilty enough. Jonathan had spent all of yesterday on her. On the way here, they’d agreed he would only drop her off at the entrance.
Instead, he stopped right in front of her. He took her hand and gently kneaded her fingers before speaking. “I’ll wait until you’re inside.”
His palm was warm and firm. Her fingers turned soft under his touch, tingling like a current had just run through her.
She nodded and turned to go, but then noticed Jonathan’s tie was slightly crooked. Stopping again, she lifted her hand to straighten it for him.
After a quick once–over, she smiled with satisfaction. “Alright, I’m off?”
Jonathan hadn’t expected that. A flicker of amusement lit up his sharp eyes, his Adam’s apple shifting as he answered, “Yeah.”

Anneliese hurried inside the hospital, while Jonathan stood tall, watching her walk away.
A car horn broke the moment, and he turned to see Carter behind the wheel of a Hummer. The window rolled down, and Carter leaned out with a grin.
“Well, Mr. Fullbuster. Practicing the fine art of wife–watching already? Tell me, how long before you turn into a statue from staring too much?”
Jonathan shot him a look. “Don’t bother asking. You don’t qualify.”
That landed harder than Carter liked, leaving him speechless.
But Jonathan wasn’t done. He bent down slightly, resting his left hand on the window frame. The ring on his finger caught a quiet glint of morning light.
“When you’ve got one of these, then we’ll talk. You do know what this is, right? A wedding ring. My honey slid it on after I got down on one knee.” He tilted his head, eyes on Carter’s chest. “By the way, no tie today? You really ought to work on that if you’re serious about finding a wife. Look at mine, perfect knot, thanks to my honey’s handiwork.”
Carter just froze, stunned.
D*mn, what’s got him so hyped today? And seriously, is this any way to treat the doctor who saved his life?
“Mr. Fullbuster, maybe you should go ahead and sign up to donate your brain someday!” I really wanna crack his head open just to see how that world–class lovesick brain of his even works!
