Mikita had always been someone who lived in the shadows. She’d never met Anneliese face to face before, only seeing her in photos on Selina’s phone.
Their encounter at the watch store had been the first time they’d ever met, so Mikita never had. a chance to notice whether Anneliese had a birthmark on her arm.
Hiroto hesitated for a moment. “Mikita, are you sure you remember it correctly? Maybe the birthmark was somewhere else?”
Mikita shook her head. “I’m absolutely sure!”
Back when she switched the babies, she was only nineteen, and she was terrified and nervous, so the memory was especially vivid.
That child definitely had a green, crescent–shaped birthmark on her arm.
Selina frowned as well. “Anneliese doesn’t have any birthmarks.”
There wasn’t one on her arm, or anywhere else, for that matter.
“How is that possible? Could it have faded as she got older?” Hiroto wondered.
Mikita shook her head. “Maybe, but the birthmark I saw back then was really dark. It didn’t

When Selina and Hiroto left the detention center with the lawyer, they were both still thinking about what Mikita had said.
“When Anneliese was brought back to the White family, did they do a DNA test?” Hiroto asked Selina.
Selina nodded and explained, “Anneliese’s DNA was entered into the database, and they found her by matching it to my dad’s. When my dad got to Baytree, they did another paternity test at the police station to confirm she was really his daughter before taking her home.”
Hiroto frowned. “If that’s the case, then it’s unlikely there was a mistake. The birthmark must have faded over time.”
Selina fell silent, glancing at the lawyer.
“Mr. Fenwick, what kind of defense should we use for my mom’s case?”

The lawyer looked troubled. “There’s no denying your mom switched the babies, and she’s confessed to it. That alone is enough for a child trafficking charge. Right now, the most urgent thing is to find the older couple who took the baby. If we find them, that can clear up any suspicion of child abandonment or intentional harm.
“Right now, getting the victims‘ forgiveness is crucial. If the White family and Ms. Claude don’t press too hard, I might be able to get your mom a lighter sentence, and maybe even probation…”
Selina nodded. As for the White family, Melanie, Perseus, and Christopher had all loved her for years, and she’d fooled them for just as long.
Their anger now was only because they were upset. Selina believed that if she cried a little harder, put on a pitiful act, and apologized relentlessly, she could probably get them to soften.
The real problem was Anneliese.
That woman was just too stubborn–she would never give in.
Plus, she had Jonathan backing her, which made things even harder.
But what if there was a problem with Anneliese’s identity?
If there had really been a mix–up, and Anneliese wasn’t Melanie’s real daughter after all, then she’d have nothing to do with this case.
Selina’s eyes lit up as the thought crossed her mind. She hurriedly said goodbye to the lawyer and got into the car.
She was desperate to get a hair sample from Anneliese.
She called Anneliese right away, but the call didn’t go through–Anneliese had already blocked her.
Selina tried WhatsApp, but found she’d been blocked there, too.
Anxious, she asked the cab driver, “Hi, my phone’s out of battery. Can I borrow yours to make a call?”
The driver handed over his phone, and she quickly dialed Anneliese’s number.
The call connected almost immediately.
“Hello, who is this?”

“Anneliese, it’s me. I-”
Selina spoke in a rush, but before she could finish, the call was cut off.
Fuming, Selina called again.

But this time, all she got was a busy signal. Apparently, Anneliese had blocked that number,
too.
Selina had thought that since Anneliese had set up Timothy and Mikita to be taken to the police station, she’d be waiting for the chance to rub it in her face.
She figured if she asked to see Anneliese, she would agree in a heartbeat.
If that were the case, it would be easy to get her hair sample.
But to her surprise, Anneliese ignored her completely, as if she didn’t exist.
The feeling was awful. It made Selina feel like a total fool, as if she didn’t even register in Anneliese’s eyes.
In a fit of anger, she slammed the phone down.
The next moment, with a screech, the cab came to a halt.
The driver kicked Selina out and made her pay several hundred dollars for damaging his phone.
Left standing by the road, Selina stamped her foot in frustration.
