Jessica, on the other hand, was about to call Anneliese after spotting her. However, Meatloaf acted first. She rushed into the elevator and headed straight for Jonathan.
Jessica gazed at Jonathan, who was dressed in a pilot’s uniform, looking absolutely fine in both appearance and physique.
At once, her jaw dropped, and she blurted out, “Oh my God! Annie, you were actually serious last night?! You really brought home a random pilot for a night of fun?! You–mmmph!”
In a fit of panic, Anneliese dashed out of the elevator and covered Jessica’s mouth, preventing her from saying further.
She was so flushed with embarrassment that she dared not look at Jonathan’s expression in the elevator at all and quickly dragged Jessica outside.
“You and him…” Jessica still attempted to speak despite having her mouth covered.
“It’s not what you think!” Anneliese quickened her pace.
Jessica broke free once outside the building.
“Slow down a little! Don’t stretch your legs! Say, was he not up to par? How many times in one night? Strange. How come you’re still able to walk as if on wings instead of feeling sore enough to get out of bed?”
“Jessica, please shut up!”
Jessica’s car was parked downstairs. As if being chased by a ghost, Anneliese urged Jessica to drive off after getting in with her.
Left with no choice, Jessica drove away. “I’m telling you, these pilots live a messy love life. They fly around and have affairs with women everywhere. Did you check his medical report last night?” she said upon glancing at Anneliese, who was covering her face in the passenger seat.
Anneliese rubbed her flushed face and cast her a despondent look,
“He lives on the floor above me and is a married man with a daughter. You’ve got it all wrong!”
“What?”
Jessica blinked. A sense of disappointment instantly manifested in her chest as she recalled Jonathan’s handsome face, great physique, and charming aura.

“Ah! It’s so awkward! I really want to strangle you!” Anneliese glared at her and stretched out her hands.
“Can’t you be a little nicer to an old friend? It’s your fault for misleading me last night.” Jessica swatted her hands away and ungratefully shifted the blame.
Anneliese remained silent.
Last night, Jessica had insisted on setting her up for a night out.
She, thinking about the awkward situation in the elevator, irritably snapped at Jessica.
‘No need. The pilot is already with me in the elevator.‘
Yet, never once did it cross Anneliese’s mind that Jessica would bump into her and Jonathan leaving together early in the morning. Clearly, she would misunderstand the whole thing.
Anneliese rubbed her hair, feeling like weeping but had no tears.
Still, figuring there was nothing she could do about it, she stopped stressing herself out and said, “Forget it. Let’s just go to the supermarket.”
With that, Jessica drove out of the neighborhood. “Okay. I’ll let you boss me around for free today.”
“Really appreciate it. Have you had your breakfast yet? Why did building so early?”
“I came to drop off Meatloaf. Meatloaf…”

As Jessica spoke, she sensed something was off. In an instant, she turned her head to look at Anneliese.
Anneliese, too, looked at her in shock. A second later, they both spoke in unison.
“Where’s Meatloaf?”
“Where’s Meatloaf?!”
Jessica promptly slammed on the brakes.
Both recalled that Meatloaf seemed to have rushed straight into the elevator just now when the doors opened.
Giving Anneliese a doubtful stare, Jessica questioned, “Didn’t you say he’s not a random man

on the streets and just your upstairs neighbor? So, why is Meatloaf so close with him then?”
“I want to know too. I’m really not close with him!” Anneliese swore. As she was currently worried about Meatloaf, she couldn’t be bothered to argue with Jessica and hurriedly called Jonathan.
Jonathan answered promptly. But he seemed to enjoy making her feel awkward, as he
remained silent.
Anneliese cleared her throat. “About earlier…”
“Yes? Are you calling to explain? I’m listening,” Jonathan interrupted, his bassy voice grew huskier through the phone, sending waves of pleasantness to her cardrum.
As a result, the flush on Anneliese’s face, which had subsided earlier, resurfaced, and she showed no response to Jonathan’s words.
She had no idea what there was to explain or how she could do it. In fact, she completely struggled to explain anything.
“Um, Mr. Fullbuster, is Meatloaf with you? I think I left her behind just now. Can I come back to pick her up now?”
Jonathan appeared to chuckle ambiguously on the other end. But then again, it was perhaps her imagination.
“She’s at my place, but I had to rush to a meeting and have already left. Come pick her up at
noon.”
With that, Jonathan ended the call.
Anneliese stared at her phone, speechless.
For some reason, she felt like she had fallen into a situation where her child had been taken hostage and was waiting for her to settle the score with the kidnapper.
Anneliese headed to Astoria University after returning from the supermarket.
Prof. Clocke and his senior students weren’t at Astoria University as they were currently at a research lab in Westrough.
However, he did have an assistant from the department send Anneliese the key to the archives.
Stacks of files containing old documents, laboratory data from previous years, and more piled up in the room. Because Prof. Clocke had taken his team away, it had been a long time since
