Anneliese rushed through brushing her teeth and splashing water across her face. She dressed quickly and stepped out again, her eyes sweeping the bedroom from corner to corner. Still nothing. No trace of surprise.
The room glowed with dazzling light spilling in from outside. Snow had turned the world bright white. Only then did she realize she had forgotten the snowfall entirely. She had been too caught up in her hunt to notice.
She hurried to the balcony, grabbed the handle, and froze in place.
Two little snowmen stood where she and Jonathan had embraced the night before.
They had shiny black marbles for eyes. They had sharp carrots for noses. Black yarn stretched across their faces, forming cheerful smiles. Jonathan had even dabbed pink circles onto their cheeks, like faint blush.
The taller snowman wore a black top hat and a gray scarf. The smaller one had a red cap and a red scarf to
match.
Anneliese’s heart softened at once. She loved them instantly. She hardly dared move. She feared the tiniest shift of the door might ruin them.
She crouched, staring through the glass for what felt like forever. At last, she slid the door open, pulled out her phone, and snapped pictures.
I found the surprise!‘
One photo captured the two snowmen. Another showed her crouching beside them, making a heart with her hands.
Now these babies are mine!‘
Her joy surged, but then worry pricked her. She opened the weather forecast.
Oh no. No more snow today. They’ll melt by noon.’
Her chest sank. She wanted to stay home, to skip everything.
Jonathan’s reply steadied her heart.
Don’t worry. Every time it snows, every single year, I’ll build you snowmen.
Her thumbs flew. Then next time we’ll build them together!‘

online.

Anneliese laughed at her screen. She lingered with the snowmen a little longer before tearing herself away.
Even at breakfast, she could not resist turning to Mabel.
“Mabel, could you bring all the ice from the freezer to the balcony later?” Her voice trembled with hope.
“I just want to keep the snowmen a little longer.”
Mabel had already seen the photos. She smiled widely.
“Don’t worry, ma’am. I’ll bring up buckets of ice. I’ll even shave fresh ice from the machine to scatter around them. I’ll guard your love snowmen.”
Anneliese’s face flushed. “Wouldn’t that be too much trouble?”
“Not at all.” Mabel waved her hand and headed straight for the kitchen.
By the time Anneliese drove out of Maple Bay, her mood soared. The world felt bright, light, and perfect.
But at the first turn, a car swerved and cut in front of her.
Her tires screamed against the asphalt as she slammed the brakes. Her brows pulled tight. She lifted her head, and the driver’s door swung open. Someone annoying showed up.
Selina stepped out.
She strode up to the window and knocked twice against the glass.
Anneliese pressed her lips into a thin line.
Jonathan’s warning echoed in her mind. He had been right. She should plan on moving out.
Last night Zacharias. This morning Selina. They knew where she lived. It was unbearable.
She drew in a breath, slow and steady, then lowered the window.
