There was nothing quite as satisfying as tightening one’s grip just when the prey thought it had a chance to escape.
“Got it,” Zion replied.
Jonathan’s voice was cold as he continued, “Looks like Calvin Brooks really is dead, seeing how desperate he’s getting away. After all this time, and they still can’t find a body?”
He hadn’t been certain before whether it was Timothy or Hiroto who had helped Selina deal with Calvin, but now Hiroto’s panic to flee made things clear. The White brothers must have tipped him off, and his people must’ve discovered Calvin’s disappearance. Hiroto probably knew that if he didn’t run now, he’d end up with a murder charge on his back.
“It’s been about three months, so a lot of evidence is gone, Zion reported. “But after checking the local underground, we found a lead. About two months ago, a hitman named Arkas took a job from someone in Oceaton. The target was a Lunasian man–very likely Calvin. We’re already tracking Arkas down.”
“Good. Put more men on Hiroto Hodge and Selina White. Also, assign a bodyguard to my wife -but don’t stick too close and make her nervous.” Jonathan’s tone softened slightly at that last part. He couldn’t risk either of those two turning desperate. Once Arkas was found, he’d take care of them all in one sweep.
After hanging up, Jonathan thought of how Anneliese would be leaving the next day to pick up her grandmother. The thought of being separated from his sweet wife for several days only soured his mood further.
He returned to the bedroom to find Anneliese sitting on the couch, reading through new documents from Alexander under the warm glow of a reading lamp. Without a word, Jonathan strode over, took the papers from her hands, and scooped her up.
“Hey! I wasn’t done reading!” she gasped.
Even as he carried her away, her eyes stayed fixed longingly on the papers he’d tossed aside. Jonathan felt a pang of helpless exasperation. “What, is your husband not as interesting as a few sheets of paper?” His voice was low and rough–clearly displeased.
Anneliese blinked at him innocently. “Of course not! But don’t you think you’re acting a little
bit like…”
“Like what?” he asked, narrowing his eyes.

She dared not say he was like an incubus distracting her from her career. Her eyes darted quickly, which was answer enough. Jonathan gave a quiet huff and abruptly changed direction, heading not for the bed but toward the balcony instead.
“Wait–where are you going?” she asked in surprise.
He nipped lightly at her ear. “Didn’t you say you liked that pair of snowmen? They’ll melt soon. Tonight, I’ll make sure you get a good look.”
Before she could react, he set her down by the floor–to–ceiling windows. Then, with one swift motion, he turned her around, guiding her hands against the glass as his warmth pressed up behind her. The temperature around them rose in an instant.
Outside, the pair of snowmen still stood amid scattered shards of ice, encircled by twinkling string lights. Their pure eyes stared blankly ahead as Anneliese’s breath fogged the glass. The contrast made her blush even deeper–ice and snow before her, blazing heat behind.
The mix of chill and fire left her trembling and breathless. By the time she finally drifted to sleep in his arms, she dreamed of those two innocent snow figures coming to life, sobbing as they scolded her to return their pure, untainted eyes.
The next morning, Anneliese awoke to the sound of footsteps and soft voices outside. She got ready quickly and stepped out of the bedroom, only to see several people moving in and out, carrying boxes.
Jonathan stood tall and composed by the living room windows, dressed in a crisp pilot’s uniform, speaking into his phone. When he heard the servants greet her, he turned and saw her standing there, still dazed. He ended the call at once and walked over.
The sunlight streamed through the vast windows, gilding his broad shoulders and the glearning stripes on his epaulettes. The blue–and–white uniform fit him perfectly- commanding and elegant. The sight hit Anneliese like a physical blow; her cheeks flushed, her heart racing uncontrollably.
She bit her lip, silently scolding herself. Get a grip. It’s not like you haven’t seen him in uniform before.
But she still couldn’t tear her gaze away. Not until he reached her did she blink.
“Today’s the maiden flight of the C999, Jonathan told her gently. “I’ll be piloting it myself— we’re leaving soon.”
Anneliese’s eyes widened. She knew all about the C999–it was AeroAir’s first independently

developed aircraft, heavily promoted as a new milestone for the nation’s aviation industry.
But she hadn’t known Jonathan would be the one flying it. The news jolted her fully awake from her lovestruck haze, and she instinctively reached for his hand, gripping it tightly.
“What’s wrong?” he asked, slightly startled by the sudden strength in her grasp.
