Two minutes later, Jessica, who was busy at the hospital escorting a patient and running around collecting medical reports, suddenly received a text from her best friend.
‘Aaaah! Jess, I’m in love! Real, sweet, heart–thumping love! Bless me!‘
Jessica stared at her phone speechlessly as she grabbed the last report and headed toward the elevator.
‘So the hopeless romantic finally returned, huh? Guess Mr. Fullbuster really did turn you into a lovesick fool again.’
As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she spotted an elderly lady sitting on a waiting bench and hurried over to help her up.
“All the reports are out, Mrs. Goodwin! And you know what? I passed by a window and heard magpies chirping–definitely a good omen. Don’t worry, I’m sure it’s nothing serious. Let’s go see what the doctor says.”
“Alright. You’ve been such a dear, running around for me, child. I’ve got plenty of friends my age, and let me tell you–you’re one of the kindest and most patient young people I’ve met. Always so attentive, never complaining. I’ll recommend you to all my friends next time they need a check–up!”
Jessica laughed. “That’s so kind of you, I–ugh!”
Her words were cut short as a wave of sudden nausea hit. She turned aside, gagging dryly.
When she straightened again, the elder was watching her with curious eyes. pregnant?”
Jessica froze. “Pregnant?”
“Are you
She quickly waved her hands with a laugh. “No way, Mrs. Goodwin. I’m not even married! I’ve just been having some stomach issues lately. Come on, let’s go inside.”
Still, as she spoke, her fingers tightened around the plastic folder holding the reports.
While the doctor went over the X–rays and explained Mrs. Goodwin’s condition, Jessica stood beside them, completely distracted.
Could I really be pregnant?

She had been feeling nauseous lately, but until the elder mentioned it, she hadn’t even considered the possibility.
She and Zane had always used protection. And back when she was living with the Johnson family, she’d endured so much hardship that it left her with a weak uterus and irregular cycles -sometimes skipping two or three months entirely.
But now that she thought about it… Ever since she and Zane had been together, she hadn’t had a period at all.
Her brows furrowed deeper, anxiety creeping in. Still, she pinched her fingertips and shook her head. No—that’s impossible. We’ve been careful. I can’t be that unlucky… right?
Meanwhile, Anneliese had brought her grandmother back to Maple Bay. Supporting her gently, she unlocked the door to the penthouse with a cheerful smile.
“We’re home, Grandma! Sit here for a bit, I’ll grab your slippers. I got you a red pair–they’re festive for the New Year. Do you like—”
Her chatter stopped mid–sentence.
As she pulled out the slippers, another pair tumbled out along with them–an oversized pair unmistakably belonging to a man. And, of course, they landed right at Nishay’s feet.
Anneliese’s lips twitched nervously. She quickly reached down to grab them, but Nishay beat
her to it.
“These are men’s slippers, aren’t they? Why do you have these here?”
Anneliese snatched them back and stuffed them into the cabinet. “Just in case, you know? If a friend or coworker visits, they’ll have something to wear.”
Thankfully, her grandmother only nodded, seeming not to think much of it.
Anneliese explained that she’d bought the apartment with money from her divorce settlement, and Nishay believed her. After showing her around, Nishay, tired from the trip, went to lie down and rest.
That night, Anneliese sprawled across the large bed. It should’ve felt comfortable, yet the room felt unbearably empty and cold. She realized she’d already grown used to falling asleep in Jonathan’s warm embrace.
Restless, she sat up and opened her phone, scrolling through the news about AeroAir’s C999

The flight had landed safely in Serava two hours ago. She’d even sent Jonathan a message on WhatsApp right at touchdown time–but he hadn’t replied yet, whether because he was busy or hadn’t seen it, she didn’t know.
Online, there were plenty of updates–official reports, passenger posts, and bloggers sharing their flight experiences.
She clicked through them absentmindedly, lingering longer on posts with photos, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. But Jonathan had always been low–profile; unsurprisingly, she didn’t see him in any pictures.
Until one photo made her stop cold.
A travel blogger had shared their experience.
‘The themed in–flight meal combined Serava–inspired flavors–absolutely delicious. The cabin was incredibly comfortable too. And the highlight? The captain’s special multilingual greeting! He switched languages so smoothly, accent flawless–like a professional interpreter! And that voice… so rich and magnetic. Totally swoon–worthy. Too bad I was too excited to record it!‘
