Chapter 14

The resolute words Melody had said when she broke up with him still echoed in his mind.

*Landon Crow, I like you, for longer than you know. I thought I could like you for a lifetime, but, I’m too tired. So, let’s just let our memories end here.”

Thinking of the hurt expression that must have been on Melody’s face on the other end of the line, Landon’s heart gave an uncontrollable pang of pain.

It turned out he liked Melody more than he had thought.

Landon had to admit that in the month or so he had been with Melody, she had won him over long ago.

Her vulnerability, her deep affection, her thoughtfulness-these were all things Landon had never experienced with any other girl.

And it was precisely these things that became the perfect weapon against him. He had long since shed his nonchalant exterior in the face of Melody’s repeated tenderness and had surrendered to her.

Actually, ever since Lucas mentioned at the karaoke bar that Melody had been their high school classmate, Landon had remembered that meeting with her on the school rooftop back then.

It wasn’t that Landon truly didn’t remember that Melody was in his class, it was just that her current image was so different from how she was in high school that he had a hard time connecting the two.

Because even though they were classmates for three years, their paths had barely crossed.

The most contact they had was probably their placement on the grade-level leaderboards for all three years.

As the top students in the advanced humanities class, their names always appeared one after the other at the very top of the rankings.

When Elodie said he never knew how outstanding Melody was, she was wrong. Otherwise, how would he have known she was a “good girl”?

Landon had always known how exceptional Melody was. Since freshman year, she was the unshakable number one student in their grade.

That introverted girl who wore a faded school uniform and had a somewhat comical mushroom haircut-in Landon’s memory, she seemed to have nothing but studying on her mind.

So Landon never would have guessed that Melody had secretly had a crush on him for so many years.

He thought the only hobby a good girl like Melody had was studying, he never imagined she would have a crush on a popular “bad boy” type like him.

Although his nonchalance and rebellious attitude were just a protective front, Landon had long grown accustomed to the endless stream of mixed reviews from

the outside world.

He was the top student at Northwood’s law school, and also Northwood’s infamous playboy. Landon never bothered to explain any of the rumors, because he

simply didn’t care.

The people he deeply loved had already left him. His respected father, his beloved mother-they had both abandoned him in this world, one after the other.

Landon loved them, and he hated them.

He hated them for being so cruel, for saying they would never leave him, only to be brought down by gossip and choose to end their own lives, leaving him

behind.

And now, another person who had promised him forever had left him.

He should be hateful, hating why someone would make him a promise again, only to break it again.

But this time, Landon finally realized that he was the one who was wrong.
